Elton John says "Ban Religion"

2006-11-12 by The Sludge | 29 Comments
Religion should be outlawed because it lacks compassion and promotes hatred of homosexuals, gay pop star Elton John said in an interview.

The singer was speaking in a special "gay edition" of The Observer newspaper's Music Monthly Magazine, where he shared his views on subjects ranging from being a music icon to Prime Minister Tony Blair's stance on the Iraq war.

At a time when religion is the subject of fierce debate in Britain over the right to wear the Muslim veil and other faith symbols, John complained there was a general lack of leadership from spiritual leaders.

"I think religion has always tried to turn hatred towards gay people. From my point of view, I would ban religion completely," he was quoted as saying.

"Organized religion doesn't seem to work. It turns people into really hateful lemmings and it's not really compassionate. The world is near escalating to World War Three and where are the leaders of each religion?

"Why aren't they having a conclave? Why aren't they coming together? I said this after 9/11 and people thought I was nuts. Instead of more violence why isn't there a meeting of religious leaders?" he said.

"It's like the peace movement in the Sixties. Musicians got through to people by getting out there and doing peace concerts but we don't seem to do them anymore.

"If John Lennon were alive today, he'd be leading it with a vengeance."

John complained that too many people were protesting online to take to the streets, highlighting the effectiveness of the February 2003 march against military action in Iraq that mobilized millions around the world.

With spiralling violence in Iraq, such opposition to Blair's backing of the United States had "come back to bite him on the ass," he added.

On homosexuality, the 59-year-old -- who sealed a civil partnership with his long-term partner, the Canadian film director David Furnish in December last year -- said he was happy to be viewed as the "acceptable face of gayness."

He also vowed to continue his fight for gay rights and AIDS charities: "I can't just sit back; it's not in my nature anymore. I'm nearly 60 years old after all. I can't sit back and blindly ignore it and I won't."

im not a fan of religion, but you cant ban it. You can't ban someones beliefs. Everyone has a right to believe what they want, and everyone's beliefs need to be tolerated, if not respected.

^ True. There's nothing wrong with religion as long as you can be open minded about it. Its the conservative bigots who give religion a bad name.

haha ban religion?? I'm sure that will solve a bunch of the world's problems. It's brilliant! Man I've always hated having the right to worship, it sucks!

Theoretically it makes sense because of all the holy wars, but its not possible and people should have right to worship.

Religion is the source of all evil, but banning it would be taking things a little too far.

It's not religion that's evil, it's the extremist of each nature. Just like in politics. This Message Edited On 11.14.06

although i agree with elton, and loathe organised religion with a passion, its true that it would be just as bad to try and "ban" it.

however, having said that, the act of using religion as a means to justify something legally or politically should be banned.

Humanity is too pathetically weak minded to live without some form of religion/belief system, be it Christianity or Capitalism. Also, gays get picked on because most people have to find some kind of scapegoat to attack as they cant accept their own faults.

LOL. Lets ban racism, because that will work  . The key to making religion more tolerant is to water it down gradually and to change people's minds through their own will, which takes time. Elton John is an idiot. (I am agnostic BTW).

if anyone believes banning religion would solve any problems in the world, they are either deluded or an idiot, people will always find someway to justify slaughtering one another

The vast majority of religious people are innocent, peaceful people. A lot of terrorists just use religion to 'justify' their attacks which is a load of bullshit. I'm a christian and I have friends from all religions and we respect each others views and this is the same for most of the world. None of the major religions dictate violence, people just use it as an ecxuse for violence.

That's not true. There are several places in the Koran where Allah orders the killing of infidels. There are examples of violence in the bible too of course.

Still, saying "Religion sucks" is just stupid and intolerant.

There are plenty of religions, even organized, that promote peace over all else. They just seem to be overshadowed by more corrupt versions of the same premise... so the statement seems slightly ignorant, even though it was probably generalized for public consumption.

Kind of like most of the big religions.

Cmon guys, I know this is a place for some debate, but let's not get out of hand. I've had to delete several ignorant and useless comments, so don't be one of those people.

I don't think that any ideology should ever be banned in a free nation. However, I agree with most of what he said.

Been reading a book called Religion Explained by Pascal Boyer.

Not too exciting, but offers some good reasons for the existence of religion.

That's not to say he thinks it should exist, but why it was inevitable that it should come into existence.

To me, I can see some good points and bad points about religion.

But my main thought on it is, "why bother?"

religion has never had anything good come of it.

much like governments, and nations. Governments are useless. I mean, really, what major war hasn't been between two different governments? ANARCHY 4 LYFE1!!1/!/1!
