Wintersun tour dates/album news

2011-05-15 by Observer EMERITUS | 83 Comments
Wintersun have announced a string of festival dates in Europe for the summer.

Tour Itinerary:

27.05.2011 Metalfest, Switzerland
28.05.2011 Metalfest, Germany
29.05.2011 Metalfest, Austria
03.06.2011 Metalfest, Hungary
13.07.2011 Metalcamp, Slovenia
23.07.2011 Tuska, Finland
13.08.2011 Bloodstock, UK

Later in the year the band will join Finntroll, Turisas, Alestorm etc. on their Heidenfest tour.

30.09.2011 DE - Geiselwind, Music Hall
01.10.2011 DE - Gießen, Hessenhalle
02.10.2011 DE - Berlin, Postbahnhof
07.10.2011 DE - Stuttgart, LKA Longhorn
08.10.2011 DE - Oberhausen, Turbinenhalle
09.10.2011 NL - Tilburg, 013

With regards to the band's second full-length album, Time, guitarist Teemu Mäntysaari said: "Jari started mixing Time in the beginning of February but had to put it on hold for now, because his equipment still can't quite handle the massive project. . . . With hundreds of tracks in each song project, the 4GB RAM limit is making his system unstable and basically impossible to work with.

"Some of these 64-bit plugin updates were supposed to be released already in the beginning of 2011, but we're still waiting. Once the plugins are out and Jari gets his whole system finally working at 64-bit format and without RAM limit, the mixing will continue - hopefully much smoother and faster than before."

Nuclear Blast and Spinefarm Records, labels, get almost all of this money, not Ensiferum or Wintersun.

My question is why the fuck is he using a mixing program that isn't fully 64-bit? Really?

Hyperion1001

May 16th 2011

It's not the program, it's the plugins. I've had to deal with that shit too actually. My 64-bit program can use all my ram and is super fast, but it's really, really hard to find 64 bit compatible plugins, at least for free. So i guess i can see where hes coming from.

You'd figure that a professional-level piece of software would have plugins that are capable of dealing with things like this (aka 64-bit, and especially if you pay for them) but I guess I'm mistaken.

he uses cubase

cubase is one of the leading softwares

it will have 64-bit plugins

EDIT- Just checked and it's only $500... not too bad I guess

uhh like under a year ago he got nuclear blast to pay for everything anyway

hey here's an idea why don't you render the parts seperately

RAM issue gone

i mean come on Jari jesus fuck

Most plugins are universal so that's not really an issue, but yeah, they are definitely out there, i bet he just can't pay for it, like crysis said.

I still say it'll never be released.

I knew it was hard for underground bands to make money, but Ensiferum and Wintersun are relatively popular. Must be hell for the even more obscure bands.

I can see the next update now:

"Hey guys, so we got all the plugin issues sorted out and started the mixing..... only to realize there's so many tracks we need 16GB of RAM to make it all work...... well, see you all in 3 years!"

DarkNoctus
May 16th 2011
12201 Comments

so he still can't use more than 4GB of RAM.

so he's using 4GB of RAM now, implying he has more in his system now anyway

he doesn't need a new computer ffs

Hyperion1001

With fucking 100 plus tracks he's gonna need a cray supercomputer to run that shit god damn.

There's no reason for that, unless he's tracking literally every note in a separate track.

C'mon now, RAM really isn't expensive at all. Just suck it up, upgrade your tech, and put this thing out. This album is slowly becoming the Duke Nukem Forever of metal.

Hi everybody, if you check the source link it says Jari already has a new computer.

"Jari's been upgrading his home studio equipment bit by bit and has now the latest Mac Pro and Cubase 6 but most of the plugins he'd need for mixing don't exist in 64-bit format yet, so he still can't use more than 4GB of RAM"

Maybe he would have more money for gear if he actually released albums and more people would go to his shows because they would be more than listening to Winter Madness for the 300th time in 8 years. But he can't release albums because he doesn't have the right equipment yet. But he can't get equipment because he never released albums. But he...

Way too many tracks. WAY TOO MANY TRACKS, haha. It's probably stupid stuff too like oh here's a 3 second choir sample that appears 30 times. Different tracks for each instead of condensing it into one.

It's hard for me to fathom how someone can put themselves into a position like this really. Spend money, make life easier and get some better 64-bit plug-ins.

Those quotes make it sound like this band doesn't know what they're doing when it comes to the production. With an efficient workflow you shouldn't need more than 4gb of ram to run the necessary plugins given what's available today for use. It's not like he has to run the plugins simultaneously on all 100+ tracks. Not to mention, people have been doing big orchestral projects and movie scores and such long before 64bit became an option; those guys usually use multiple systems in conjunction to get the necessary CPU power.

Damon Albarn recorded an entire album on an iPad. Jari, you're a talented guy, but don't you think it would make life easier if you worked on some tunes on the side and recorded on a no-string budget that could turn you a profit without having to go through all this rigmarole?
