They released a fantastic album in 2009 Kill called Hospice. You should check it out. Way better than
this. This is kinda 2 to 3 territory.

It's just my opinion and I've only listened to it twice too. Maybe it's just yet to click with me but without songs that really grip you, this is such a quiet and conserved album. Nothing really happens in it.

Listened to it last night. No way near a two. I'd say 3.5-4.

The album doesn't really 'do' anything.

So do I. I really like The Antlers as both people and musicians. =/

This record provoked no emotions, left no hooks nor was I impressed by any unique sounds.

I just wished for 'some' pop tunes like early The Antlers or like Bear.

I knew that there was very little way this would live up to Hospice, and wasn't by any means looking
for another "sad" album. But I was hoping that it would still be amazing rather then good... Maybe it
just needs a few more listens...

Putting the dog to sleep rules so does Every Night My Teeth Are Falling Out, I wouldn't say there's anything here I dislike it's just that some of it is a little more forgettable. Just my two cents after first listen.

People are looking for something incredibly moving and that's why the full effect of this album won't hit them.

It's essentially the opposite of Hospice, relaxed where the other was cathartic. Just stop looking for that huge musical hit to the face and listen, and it'll find you

This is really good.

@myhigherpie
Well put. I think the same people who don't like this will also dislike the new Bon Iver. Here's the thing...Justin Vernon and Peter Silberman aren't in the same place emotionally as they were when they wrote "For Emma" or "Hospice". And I'm sure they wouldn't want to be. So enjoy what they do next without comparing it to the prior release, which you know they'll never be able to duplicate, and I'm sure you'll like it just fine. "Hospice" is in my top 5 favorite albums of all time, and so far I love "Burst Apart". Just in a different way.

Porkchop speaks the truth. It's like trying to compare the Mona Lisa to The Last Supper. While painted by the same man, they are wholly different works of art evoking disparate feelings.

I like that they're consciously not trying to create a second Hospice. It would just be really disappointing.

That being said, this is really good. I wish I had lyrics, because that's what really sold me on Hospice. Right now this is just sounding like well written, heartfelt, art rock/indie pop. More groove based, and really chill. I'd imagine that if you listened to Hospice, you could listen to Burst Apart to sort of "recover".

I need to check this out. Even if it's not as good as Hospice, I can't imagine they produced anything that wasn't atleast slightly good.
