Solomon Burke dies

2010-10-10 by Dave de Sylvia EMERITUS | 58 Comments
Soul singer Solomon Burke has died at Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport at the age of 70.

Burke had recently arrived on a flight from Los Angeles when he was found unresponsive and could not be resuscitated. He was due to perform in the city on Tuesday with De Dijk, the Dutch rock band whose songs formed his final, Hold on Tight.

Philadelphia-born Burke rose to prominence in the '60s, penning such classics as 'Cry to Me' and 'Everybody Needs Somebody to Love,' but faded into relative obscurity before enjoying a resurgence in popularity in the past decade.

Burke is survived by his 21 children and 90 grandchildren.

Not many artists have Tom Waits and Bob Dylan chomping at the bit to write songs for them.

Burke was, and is, a legend.

People are saying those things out of respect. He's dead and they're
paying respect. Plus, by all accounts, he was a passionate guy who lived
for his music.

If you want to question his integrity as a person or imply he might have
'eaten babies', fine, but don't do it here. It's extremely disrespectful.

I think you all missed the point, I wasn't trying to question the man, I was questioning the comments I referred to. I'm sure the man wasn't a depressed killer, I just found it kind of odd assuming he was a "great man" or whatever I dunno it was just an observation I'll shut up now m'kay

Anyone who pollutes the earth with 21 children shouldn't be proud about that fact. Also, the whole 'say nothing bad about the dead', whether it be superstitious or just out of some weird personal rule, is stupid. This guy just made a couple songs that caught the public eye, he wasn't a saint and/or his Wikipedia article doesn't start out with "THE NICEST MAN ON THE WHOLE PLANET, EVER". People have the right to think whatever they want.

holy shit 21 children

he made jokes in interviews about how he stopped reading the bible at the part about being fruitful and multiplying

so its cool to leave hateful and disrespectful comments on people you don't like like the rev from A7X but not point out this guy had a abnormal amount of kids?
A lot of the comments in the Rev's article were pathetic, I agree, but the "if they did it there why can't I do it here" excuse isn't a good one.

i think we gotta calm down it's not like this guy is gonna log onto sputnik from beyond the grave to check how many RIP's he got from core-kids too young to appreciate/know about his music...

No, it isn't cool to leave disrespectful comments on the news of A7X's drummers death. And no, he's not going to log-in, but hey, maybe one of his grandkids might, or his great grandkids. Even still, it's respect. He had a lot of kids, it's fine to react to that. What I'm saying is the people making comments about him 'keeping it in his pants' and so forth aren't appropriate.
