DJ Shadow: Interview badass

2006-10-02 by Damrod EMERITUS | 10 Comments
It seems DJ Shadow is not really happy with the feedback his new album is getting. His 'frustration' errupted in a telephone interview with German music news site laut.de. A transcript of the interview up to the poibnt where Shadow hung up, taken from the site (and translated back into English by me):
===========================================

Andreas Hierling: Hello DJ Shadow. How is your current tour?
DJ Shadow: Oh, going well
Andreas Hierling:Your new album "The Outsider" is discussed a lot on the web. Many people, especially your older fans, are not liking your new material that much. Do the new songs work better live?
DJ Shadow: It seems so, yeah
Andreas Hierling: Would you say that the American or the European audience likes you new stuff better? Or is there no real difference noticable?
DJ Shadow:(angry) Ah, I don't know. It seems like ten people decided to hate the whole record and influence the whole journalist fraction, so everybody is thinking nobody likes "The Outsider". What do I know. (laughs) It's not like I'm Bob Dylan and boohed off the stage, as soon as I play a HyPhy-track. I don't know, but it seems the audience likes the new stuff.
Andreas Hierling: But do they like the older stuff more?
DJ Shadow: Live?
Andreas Hierling: Yes.
DJ Shadow: (ironic) Eh, yes. The people only like my old material.
Andreas Hierling: Do you personally like the more mellow tracks of "The Outsider" or rather the harder HyPhy-Rap tracks that dominate the new album?
DJ Shadow: (ironic) Nobody likes the new record. Everybody only loves "Entroducing".
Andreas Hierling: Eh, ok... is that really the way you think?
DJ Shadow: Apperantly ...
Andreas Hierling: But "The Private Press" was embraced by the fans and critics alike.
DJ Shadow: No, I think they all just want "Entroducing"
Andreas Hierling: Ok, sure, "Entroducing" was a milestone. But the people loves "The private Press" as well. With "The Outsider" though, it seems like people are going mad, asking themselfs what went wrong with DJ Shadow producing HyPhy-songs.
DJ Shadow: (serious again): Yes, yes, I know. That is really a problem ... (lowers voice) It's a problem, it's a big problem ...
Andreas Hierling: But you like the new stuff and like to work with E-40, TurfTalk, KeakDaSneak and the other Bay Area-rappers. So it is really "your thing"?
DJ Shadow: Oh yeah. Definately!
Andreas Hierling: I think, nobody would have linked you to the BayArea and the HyPhy-thing. Why do you confront us with this so late?
DJ Shadow: I don't know, I was born and raised in the Bay Area. So it's no real suprise that I produce a BayArea-Sound. I started my carreer with Timur and Paris, both BAy Area rapper. It's really strange that I'm doing BayArea-stuff now...
Andreas Hierling: You worked with folks like Gift of Gab of Blackaliciousor the Quannum-MCs together. Would you like to work with them again, or are that projects of the past?
DJ Shadow: No. Lateef of Quannum MCs is on my new record and is touring with me.
Andreas Hierling: He is featured on one song on your new record, that is not much. The HyPhy-songs dominate your new album ...
DJ Shadow: Yes yes, I know.... >click

But to be honest: I doubt others would ask questions that are 100% different. He changed his sound in a more or less drastic manner, it's clear the media will ask how the fans react to it, why you changed the sound etc

I don't know, there was an interview in a magazine I read that wasn't nearly this stupid. Good for Shadow, hanging up on this idiot.

Thank you for your appreciation!

But to my own defense, i want to say that i was a little bit confused and nervous, because i'm really a big Dj Shadow fan, listening to his records since 1998, and never got disappointed until "The Outsider".

But to hear one of my (former) biggest Idols together with such freaks like e-40, who want to sue people for using "his" slang like "Fa shizzle ma nizzle" really made me mad (Read the whole story on http://eastbayexpress.com/Issues/2004-06-30/music/close2thaedge2_1.html). This in context to the exzessive sampling use in Dj Shadows former works and the fact that hiphop to a large extent bases on sampling, shows me one thing: That Josh Davis aka. Dj Shadow sold his soul and is now in fact only a shadow of itself...

The whole HyPhy-Movement should really stop sniffin' their damn snow and better put in some Acid, maybe that would help.

And btw: Read the answers from Shadow on the first three questions and you should see (some intellect assumed), that he surely didn't had his best day to do an interview. He got already huffy after the fourth question. And to that point the Questions where absolutely ok and reasonable...

*cheers*
