Man dies at Swell Season gig

2010-08-20 by sniper | 67 Comments
A man fell to his death in an apparent suicide at a performance by the Swell Season in San Francisco on Thursday night.

At approximately 10 p.m., concert-goers at The Mountain Winery witnessed a young man climb to the roof of the venue's outdoor stage and jump three stories to his death. It was reported that the man ran off the roof and "did a couple of flips" before landing on a speaker about three feet from The Swell Season vocalist Glen Hansard.

Holy shit. I panicked at first and thought it was one of the band members, but this is still bad. If that
happened to me I don't know if I would ever play again.
Glen is a real man for trying to help him though.

Hell of a way to go tbh, but regardless, sucks for everyone who had to witness this incident. Not the douchebag who decided to be a power ranger.

Good comment via youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0HhUuPJGbKg

I was there, and you are right. No matter whatever horrible thing that was going on in his life that made him want to do this, it was spectacularly selfish of him to force all of us to watch him kill himself. There were children in the audience who had to witness that. I hope the band realizes that this event had nothing to do with them or the beautiful music they play. What a horrible thing to do to, not just to himself, but with complete disregard for the feelings of others, as well.

So sucks to the young kids who had to witness that.

that's not cool for the kids. really though.

a person's death is an incredibly important event. to be quite honest, if i were a musician and somebody killed themselves at my show i would feel honored. after the shock had passed, i would feel privileged that someone decided to involve me in one of the most important moments of their life.

i'm well aware this is an unpopular position.

Suicides are not the saddest kind of deaths. If somebody wants to die, then they can die. It's worse when somebody is killed that wanted to live.

Honestly three stories is not a stage diving distance. Have you ever looked down from that high up and thought you could survive a jump? Doubtful, js. I think he was probably doing to spite an ex or someone who was there. Totally fucked up shit.

This is so messed up on so many levels...why would he do it in a public place? I don't understand these kind of people...like the people who go postal and shoot off as many people as they can before offing themselves. It's complete cowardice that you need people to watch you kill yourself.

I think in the right (or wrong) mindset, The Swell Season's music is capable of making someone have the urge of jumping off a roof. Right now, being drunk because of a mental breakdown with my girlfriend, I can see the potential suicide tendencies.

But would I ever act upon them? NO WAY.

If anything, their music is a soothing coping mechanism that brings forth the emotions I need to get off my chest. The fact that someone actually took their life in that dramatic of a fashion is just downright depressing. Can you imagine how traumatic that was for the people there? And especially for Hansard, since the guy's dead, limp body landed mere feet away from him. That's the kind of thing that sticks with someone for the rest of their lives.

as mentioned before in these comments (more or less), suicide is one kind of thing. i can understand it. it is very sad, but it is all about a person's PERSONAL misery. however, it's a different kind of thing to traumatize an audience with a death. there almost certainly had to be heavy drug usage involved. that's not a normal depressed person move, that's a psychopathic dude.
