Madonna Defends Crucifixion 2006-09-22 by Dave de Sylvia EMERITUS | 6 Comments | Despite impassioned pleas from both the Church of England and the Russian Orthodox Church, threats of censorship by US network NBC, as well as alleged death threats from the Russian Mafia, ancient pop star Madonna refuses to apologise for losing her edge.
Madonna wrapped up her Confessions tour in Japan last night. The singer has repeatedly come in for criticism for a segment in her show during which she is suspended (no nails, unfortunately) from a giant cross wearing a crown of thorns. The singer explained that it is not intended as an anti-Christian statement, but rather serves as part of her campaign to raise money and awareness for AIDS charities.
Nobody knows how she managed to get from A to B, however concerned well-wishers have pleaded with Madonna to end the madness. A Church of England spokesman asked: "[W]hy would someone with so much talent seem to feel the need to promote herself by offending so many people?" Others have sympathised with Madonna's out-of-control controversy addiction; a fan remarked: "It used to be funny, but now she sucks at it."
According to the Czech daily Blesk, Madonna was confined to her hotel room on a recent trip to Prague, leaving only to perform her three eastern European dates in Prague and Moscow. Minders were worried that if she left, she might be assassinated by her own sense of self-importance.
Madonna is 2,006 years old.
