BBC 6 Music to remain open

2010-07-05 by Dave de Sylvia EMERITUS | 9 Comments
The BBC Trust has rejected the company's plans to shut down its digital radio station 6 Music, insisting that "the case has not been made" for its closure.

The BBC announced as part of its strategic review in March that it would close its 6 Music and Asian music stations in order to cut costs. The move that was met with public dismay by fans and musicians alike as 6 Music offered a platform to underground and independent music while the BBC's terrestrial stations moved towards the mainstream.

The Trust, which oversees the running of the BBC various media platforms, ruled that 6 Music and the Asian Network could only be shut as part of a wider digital media plan that would accommodate their existing audiences.

It concluded: "The Executive should draw up an overarching strategy for digital radio. If the director general wanted to propose a different shape for the BBC's music radio stations as part of a new strategy, the trust would consider it.

"The trust would consider a formal proposal for the closure of the Asian Network, although this must include a proposition for meeting the needs of the station's audience in different ways."
