TMV trying new angle for LP 6

2010-04-23 by oathfbass | 90 Comments
After having released a new movie, band leader, Omar Rodriguez-Lopez says he has learned a valuable lesson about teamwork that he hopes to bring back to his music.

They call him "little Hitler." That's because Omar RodrĂ*guez-LĂłpez – half of the brain trust behind the Mars Volta – likes to play dictator in the studio, obsessively controlling his fellow musicians' every move, every note. Or at least, he used to. Now that he's premiering his directorial debut The Sentimental Engine Slayer at New York's Tribeca Film Festival this week, RodrĂ*guez-LĂłpez says that the experience has taught him a valuable lesson – "how to play well with others" – which he hopes to bring back to his music. "It's one small step for me, one large step for my ego," he says.

...

Now that he's returned his attention to music – he's not working on three side projects in addition to the Mars Volta -- RodrĂ*guez-LĂłpez is trying to learn to loosen his grip in the studio. Usually, when he's done with the music, he gives it to singer Cedric Bixler-Zavala with a story and a concept and then oversees the writing of the lyrics. This time, for the band's sixth album, he's just passed the tracks along – no story, no notes – and is trying to be patient while Bixler-Zavala writes, without pressure, for the first time.

"This is very hard for me," RodrĂ*guez-LĂłpez tells Rolling Stone, "and there's not a day where I look at the phone and don't want to call him, asking, 'You got something? Come on!' This is my first challenge, to let him do it at his own pace. He's always painted by what I told him, and I didn't say anything. I want his stories."

Though he admits it's been hard to break the habit ("I've had 10 years of being a dictator"), RodrĂ*guez-LĂłpez says he's seeing the benefits of loosening his grip already. "From 2002 to 2007, I cannot tell you how unfun it must have been to be around me," he says. "I worked from 11 in the morning until 2 in the morning, no breaks, no going out for lunch, no days off. I drove an engineer mad. Another renounced me. I understand it now. And now, I stop, I eat lunch, I play with the dog, and I get four times as much done now than when I was choking it to death. Now I come back invigorated. I'm definitely happier."

TMV has recently fired their former drummer Thomas Pridgen due to disputes between him and Cedric and are currently touring with David Elitch which could delay their next album.

Deloused and Octahedron are tied for their best album imo. Frances was a bit.... overbearing. Amputecture was awesome, but not as much as Deloused and Octa. Bedlam was a complete mess.... it was a GREAT mess, but still. I would love to see another album like Octahedron. Those guys really proved that they can do soft songs pretty damn well.

My subjective opinion needs to be professed! I'm just a dick with a keyboard, but Omar puts out alot of bullshit and is clearly a dickhead; judging from how he puts his albums together, and how prolific he is as a artist. but it isnt even art because I dont appreciate it. he's just a arrogant fuck, you've seen him in those interviews; ya know where he lets cedric do all the talking and shit, but clearly is pressing his ego on everyone in the room the entire time.
Lick me sack to ass because im the most objective, insightful, and clever collection of molecules out there.

That could be the case. But even in groups that I've worked with (playing or engineering), I've found that 99% of people with that kind of attitude are usually better of when (if) they loosen up. Their a nightmare to work with, which I find hinders the final product.

But of course, there are always exceptions.

This might be good or bad. Omar is most definitely an arrogant asshole and has been since way before TMV, but he is an insanely talented asshole and responsible for most of what you hear on their records. On the other hand, the guy is kind of a musical idiot and letting the other guys who are clearly of a higher technical/musicianship level take the reins a bit more is probably a good idea.

People are still all over FTM's nuts? Frances is probably one of the most overrated albums of the last decade or so. I know, I know, OMG teh concept! 30 minutes of ambient masturbation is so deep n artistical! You just don't "get" it! Fuck all of that. DITC blows that shit away half-way through the runtime. Why? Because they wrote actual SONGS back then (thanks to Rick Rubin keeping Omar's ass in line to an extent), a trait they only recently starting showing again on TBIG and Octohedron

By calling him a musical idiot, I meant his actual technical knowledge, which he admits himself is pretty much nil. Doesn't mean he's not a fantastic musician (Jimi Hendrix never took a lesson in his life either), but his compositional skills are hit-or-miss. You can hear as much on just about anything he's played on, the dude hits random fucked up notes like it's his job

This gives me hope for the next album. De-Loused was pretty good, Frances The Mute was fucking mindblowing, Amputechture had some moments (I really liked the opening track), The Bedlam In Goliath the only track I could really bring myself to listen to was Goliath and Octahedron I pretty much have only listened to Since We've Been Wrong.

You might be able to tell I like it when they actually write a song with parts, there's nothing wrong with a hooky chorus Mars Volta! The Widow, Televators and L'via L'viaquez are all fucking awesome songs that still have some type of hook. The last three albums have had maybe 1 song and then just pure crazyness. I really want to enjoy a new album fully, but I just can't!

And I am also one of those people waiting for an At The Drive-in reunion...that would be sick. Napoleon Solo!!!
