Closure In Moscow off Soundwave

2010-02-18 by Transient | 44 Comments
Soundwave festival has dropped Closure In Moscow from their lineup, organizer AJ having
this to say about it on the official forums:

"It is amazing how the one band you book on the festival only as a favour to their
manager; whom you are paying 10 times what they are worth as a gesture of goodwill; and
you bill way above their station, turn out to be the only demanding and rude people
amongst a star-studded line up.

Here are some tips for other local bands hoping to keep a spot on a national festival:

1.Having a band member call the festival admin manager 2 days out from the festival with a
new list of demands and being aggressive, rude and yelling at her only works if you are
holding hostages.

2. Don't demand that festival vehicles and drivers pick band members up from their homes
and then drop them off after the festival. Specially if you live on an island off the Gold
Coast!

3. Don't demand that the festival should book and pay for your accommodation on top of the
$25,000 you're being paid to pay for your own lodgings.

I could go on and on. Maybe publish a book some day...
"

There will be no replacement, with revised timetables to be posted soon.

Wow, I'm honestly really surprised. I really enjoy First Temple, but this just makes them seem like total tools. ugh...

EDIT: Reading the band's response, it's hard to tell who's the "at fault" in this situation. I'm tempted to believe the band, just because they seem like really nice guys from everything I've seen, but who knows.

Arghhhh. No matter who is at fault, this could easily have been sorted out with a nice civil conversation.

Transient, it's probably best to add a link to the band's response to the news item...

i'm still inclinced to believe aj/kimmy just because it's easy to act innocent when you're replying to a message like that in any case

Just sounds like a big miscommunication. CiM ftw.

Considering they're going to play free shows I highly doubt it's their fault. I mean, Soundwave management have already proved themselves incompetentant in Sydney (and haven't learnt from their mistakes since they're opening the gates just an hour before bands start playing. That resulted in several thousand people missing bands they desperately wanted to see last year).

I like this band but they clashed with some other artists I was going to see, so I'm not disappointed. Still seems dumb though.

Not really, the bill is full of awesome bands, I wouldn't miss them much at all next to the likes of Meshuggah, FNM, Alexisonfire...

Hard to understand why a festival would go out it's way to drop a local band just days out. Negative publicity is never in anyone's interest, and neither is having to mess around with revised timetables.

SOMETHING happened to make the oragniser flip out like that.

Like most disagreements it's prob somewhere in the middle of what both claim, but who knows. The loser as always is the fans.

I bet they're both at fault.
Neither are nearly as innocent as they claim, or they're not as malevolent as they make the others to be.

Though I still like the side that gives out free shows more. Even if I can't go to them since I'm in fucking Texas.

Closure in Moscow is still amazing, though. No doubt.

Yeah, I'm siding with CIM simply because I'm already at odds with soundwave management.

The people who open the gates 1 hour before the show are not "management" they sure as hell aren't AJ. The ones at Perth opened 1 hour 30 minutes before and I got in before anyone started and I wasn't anywhere near the front of the line. So I think your problem is more how gay of a place sydney is as opposed to the festival runners.

Siding with CIM, the management of Soundwave is pretty horrible. I've had bad experiences with the last 2 soundwaves I've been to. Glad I sold my ticket now though.

I saw them back in September, they played 3 songs then the singer said that the sound guy missed something up (it sounded fine) then said fuck you, dropped the mic and left.

Going by their blog response its hard to tell whos in the wrong.

Everyone knows there is a large amount of people in the industry with huge ego's, but the same can be said for bands :/

After reading CIM's response, this just seems like a ridiculous, unproffesional rant. Even if this AJ person is right, he shouldn't release such a statement.

Regardless of who was in the right or wrong (I'm personally leaning towards the band's side of things considering that nobody would be so stupid as to blow such an opportunity and due to claims of horrible Soundwave management), the way that this manager handled things is terrible.

Rather than professionally handle the situation, he acts like a fourteen year old who just had the size of his dick insulted and cries about it on a message board. Speaking for myself, if I was a member of a band, I would dissociate myself from this guy and his festival based upon that attitude. The lineup is awesome, but I'd feel guilty ever going knowing that I would be supporting this asshole.

This hasn't changed my opinion of Closure at all. Their job is to make and perform good music, which they do.

Meh, I got a good twenty minutes of entertainment from the forum posts over on SW, so I got what I wanted out of it. Sides, schmides, promoters for big events like this are almost always dicks because they HAVE to be. For every 5 awesome bands there will be a douchey pre-madonna. Not saying CiM necessarily is one, but from experience just organizing big bands on a small scale here in town just for shows at the venue I work at, some of them bitches can be pretty demanding. Ah well.

But CiM isn't a big band, is the point.

And Palace, it'd be the way they handle the venue.

After reading both sides, I may have to side with CIM. Their argument is written more fluently and makes more sense in general. Also, I have met the drummer in person, outside of a show and he's a really nice dude. AJ's point just doesn't fit.

"And I really liked CiM" etc etc.... Does it really affect your opinion of their music whether they are assholes or not? Anyways, after reading the news I thought that it's a shame the band are such douches. Then I read their response and it seems so much more mature than AJ's so I too will probably have to side with the band...

But yeah, sad for the guys who went to see CiM even tho' it doesn't exactly affect me.
