E! Owned By Pantera Publicist

2006-08-22 by Stormy Smiley Face | 28 Comments
E! went to Pantera's publicist, Jane Hoffman, seeking permission to use footage of Dimebag Darryl for the upcoming show, "25 Most Chilling Hollywood Murders Special".

Here is her passionate response:

Hi Beau. I’m leaving John’s comments in cause he’s a nice guy and I know this was difficult for him to send on through. I’m also blind copying a whole list of folks who will most likely copy a whole other list of folks until maybe this spreads like a good email should and end up on 100,000 websites to show the world what a collective bunch of tasteless morons you all are.

Dime’s birthday is this coming Sunday and your timing couldn’t be worse. Not that there is a good time. In fact, in honor of his birthday, I think I’ll send this around to a few of our favorite music websites who will most likely print the whole damn thing word for word, including your phone number and email. For good measure, I’m going to throw in the top 50 major daily music and some of the top TV writers in the country and why not, the weeklies as well.

I realize there is nothing anyone can do to stop E! from producing garbage like this below, as you’ve built your audience on the backs of other people’s private lives, creating some type of warped reality out of your garbage, which is merely excuses for programming on the cheap and at the expense of others.

I would like to request that you please read this out out loud to all the creative geniuses in the programming department that came up with this idea.
We have received your request to license footage on Dimebag Darrell Abbott for your upcoming production of, “25 Most Chilling Hollywood Murders.”

While we realize the average E! audience most likely has the IQ of an umbrella, they collectively are a smarter bunch than the lot of you. Your programming creativity falls somewhere to the bottom of the middle at best, and that’s saying a lot.

I ask that you all please take a moment from your busy days and close your eyes. Live out the fantasy of playing your favorite instrument onstage. Your closest friends in the world surround you, either in the band or in your crew. From one side of the stage, a man approaches. Thinking he’s a security guy or a drunk fan who’s just a bit out a line, you continue to perform. Two seconds later, he lifts his arms, aims a rifle at your brother, your best friend, your buddy and blows his brains out, not three feet from where you are. In the nanosecond it takes you to comprehend the magnitude of what just happened, he does it again…and again…and again…and again…and again…and again before taking aim and murdering additional members of your extended family as well as fans that have come to see you play. Two of your crew are shot but survive, but of course, will never be the same again.

Now imagine it’s a few years later and you turn on the TV set. Just in case you may be having at least a five minute respite from that scene that plays over and over in your head, just in case…..you flip through the channels and there it is. Again. Only with some two bit actor who thinks this is his big Hollywood break.

And please, if you don’t like that scenario, make believe it’s your child who got his brains splattered all over a stage in Ohio. And then you turn on E! Oh, the magic of television!

In case none of this appears clear enough and you need a definitive answer to your request…no. The answer if no, and on behalf of everyone that was there that night and everyone that misses him every day, you can take that no and shove it up your collective asses.

And, for your second request, yes, you can quote me on that.

Sincerely,

Jane Hoffman"

wow. that was amazing.
RIP dimebag.

whats amazing is how his legacy lives on...ive been to three concerts where a band has played one of his riffs, and i was at a nickelback concert where they played the song "side of a bullet", which is in honor of dimebag and features a solo of him, while showing a slidewho of dimebag pictures and clips.
truly an amazing and inspiring musician

So wait, VH1 can use the footage of Dimebag being shot, but E! can't use any footage of Dimebag?

What an attention whore there is really no reason to send this to who ever she was going to because its not that impressive of rebuttal and who cares he's been dead for long enough not like it happened yesterday.

well it seems like ("seems" because you never know someone's intentions) that the vh1 behind the music episode was a real tribute to pantera and dime's life and death. it seemed like they actually cared, from a personnal and musical stand point.

e! is a gossip magazine made for cable tv. some might see it as it trying to use people's deaths for shock value and gossip over popcorn and beers. it doesn't seemed like they give a shit.

maybe e! is being honest and really understands the impact of darrell's death...but i doubt it.This Message Edited On 08.22.06This Message Edited On 08.22.06

Pantera have no room to speak about the audience of this or any channell. They are making it seem like E! is trying to profit off of Dimebag Darrell's death, but they need to look in the mirror and realize they are the ones capatalizing. They shouldn't even be a band any more, the only recognizable member is long gone. And any work they've done after his passing was garbage. So they should realize that E! is just trying to put together an honest list and have participents pay homage to DD and give the pathetic remnants of the band respect that they most likely do not deserve. And it's one thing to call people stupid, but it's another to have someone else articulate your hate speech into words. We know they have a rawwwk image to maintain, but this is ridiculous. What was once a good band with some nice and hard efforts has become a pathetic excuse for music, and i see this only as an attention whorish publicity stunt, which instead of having E! talk about something important like Darrell's death, they will just get owned by Ryan Seacrest, Michael Musto and others (and rightfully so) What a load of crap.

Oh yeah, and having a publicist is sooo hardcore. GTFO!!!

She, uh, could have just said "no."

It's not like they're taking a dump on a photo of John Lennon...

That was just asking for footage too, it's not like they're still not going to include him in the list.

Pantera isn't a band any more...they disbanded in 2003 before Dimebag was even shot. This Message Edited On 08.22.06

I was pretty shocked when I saw the footage of it on Vh1, I think they should do it to open peoples eyes about being a little bit more careful at concerts. This Message Edited On 08.22.06

Me too

But this whole Dimebag tribute and stuff.. Sure he was kick ass guitarist and he was really nice guy but isn't everyone a bit exagerating over the whole tribute and stuff! Yes, its alright for a few bands to cover some of pantera songs, magazines to place his pic. as poster but was Pantera thatttttttt famous?? Im sure nickelback didn't even like or maybe didn't even know and just played the soong since everyone was doing it. btw flame me if you want

what a response. bear in mind that this publicist probably knew dime too, so she'd have felt disgusted by this.

as well as the fact that i agree with every word she says there, i also despise gossip magazines/channels etc. the people those companies deserve to be shot again and again and again and again.

The response was a bit excessive, but it seems like a lot of you didn't read it. It's easy for us to watch someone we didn't know die on t.v. because we see it all the time in movies. What if it was just worlds most outrageous deaths, and your parents were on there being shot? Wouldn't that be cool too!

I saw the footage. Dime was just out of picture, but I saw the shooter. It was on Much More Music, which may just be a Canadian channel.

Don't know how they got permission to show the footage.

She doesn't come off as a very legit protestor with things like this. As a matter of fact, she almost seems to relish in what she's saying. I agree with her point, but she prances through that with all the grace of a kitten on fire.

Everything about this situation is disgusting. Some sick bastard kills his hero. Suddenly, everybody is a fan of dimes and gear companies are kicking out lunch boxes with 'R.I.P. Dime' on it.

I say why the hell not let E! make a cents off of this tragedy, everybody else is. /spits

He should be somewhere in the top 10 of the most overated deaths in history.
