Myspace Kills Imeem

2009-12-10 by Observer EMERITUS | 37 Comments
Socialsites has reported that Myspace has apparently taken over and killed Imeem:

The main reason that this transition was an absolute disaster is that they essentially killed a community. Perhaps MySpace wanted to kill their competition for under a reported $1 million. However they didn’t convert the biggest asset of the company: the community. Now all the artists will end up on a page which tells them that they should signup for MySpace Music, and users are told to standby until they get an email.

Owen Van Natta wrote to the following earlier today:

In the coming weeks, our team will be working to take the aspects of imeem that users love and migrate them to MySpace Music. We’ll start that transition today by redirecting imeem users to MySpace Music to discover their favorite music.

So if MySpace is working on it, why would they start off by killing the entire site? It makes absolutely no sense at all. There are only a few logical explanations: MySpace wanted the technology behind imeem, MySpace wanted to kill imeem, or they wanted a quick way to promote MySpace music. While a $1 million acquisition probably isn’t the biggest issue facing MySpace (they have some other announcements tomorrow), throwing away new acquisitions in the toilet probably doesn’t make much sense though.

you know, kill and buy are not the same things

MySpace buys social media music site, imeem!

MySpace has reportedly bought popular music site, Imeem, for under $1 million.

MySpace chief executive, Owen Van Natta, has posted a written statement:

"Today, MySpace Music has completed a deal to acquire certain assets of imeem - a leading social media music service. MySpace Music and imeem share a common vision and commitment to further enabling the socialization of content across the Web. This deal will allow us to leverage imeem’s industry leading technology and over time, meaningfully integrate their products into the MySpace Music experience. Since its inception in 2003, imeem has built a highly engaged music community of more than 16 million users worldwide. imeem helped pioneer the ad-supported digital music model and created the Web’s first embeddable music and video playlists enabling users to embed songs and playlists virtually anywhere on the Web, including MySpace. In the coming weeks, our team will be working as quickly as possible to take aspects of imeem that users love and migrate them to MySpace Music. We’ll start that transition today by redirecting imeem users to MySpace Music to discover their favorite music. As quickly as possible, we’ll be working to offer users the imeem playlists they’ve created on MySpace Music. We’re also happy to welcome imeem CEO Dalton Caldwell, CTO Bryan Berg, COO Ali Aydar and VP of Sales David Wade to the team as consultants to help manage this transition During this transition period, we invite all imeem users to check out MySpace Music’s extensive catalogue of fully licensed music and video content from major and indie artists, editorial coverage, concerts, and ticket information." - Owen Van Natta

Apparently Ghetto kids and scenesters keep Myspace alive with their terrible generic gangsta rap and scenecore bands.

And I would actually hate it if Myspace ended, then that'd mean the way I'd check out a lot of cool em0w bands would be gone.

To be fair, most modern musicians continue to favor Myspace over websites like Purevolume for some reason - less and less bands are having official websites because of Myspace. I still use the website to "test the waters" on a band or to find out information about them.

Myspace is still the easiest place to legally check out bands (since last.fm fucked up their site).

I haven't heard of grooveshark, though, so I'll have to look into that.

Yeah I use purevolume for the most part. Have never heard of Imeem but yes myspace does suck. I doubt Zuckerberg or whatever his name is would buy them out though he probably doesn't want to get sued or have any government intervention of his business for having a monopoly or anything. It'd be like having Walmart buy out K-Mart or Target or something.

We used Imeem for the "Free Music" features. I'll have to look to see if the player is gone from those. Which reminds me, people that missed those should check them out because most of the links still work.

Someone should write a feature highlighting alternatives to Myspace Music and Last.fm

That's crazy, I had two friends that worked at Imeem, and then met a few more of them. Well, fortunately for my friends they were already gone before this happened, but I don't know about the others.. But it is a shame. Imeem was pretty cool.

I found about this yesterday when I tried to log into my imeem account to listen to some unreleashed stuff and died a little on the inside when I realized this wasn't a joke.

Purevolume is ok, but if you're an artist you very limited on the songs you can upload for free. The Myspace Music search system sucks now since you can only do a generalized search of bands.
