News these days, sadly in some cases, is more so based around what people will pay attention to than solid substance; interpret solid substance as you will but for this sake I'll use the shock value/break from the norm articles. Case in point: Say Anything, a band that is adored on this site, posts a new song. Twenty comments and 555 views. Avril and a member from Sum 41 get divorced: more than 40 comments already and 662 views. After all, when I pick up The Washington Post I'm more inclined to read about what Kanye did to Taylor Swift than to read the same thing about swine flu and Obama's healthcare plan. Just my two cents, we've been discussing stuff like this in journalism class.
