Smashing Pumpkins: Singles Band

2008-12-11 by Flyboy | 48 Comments
In an interview by the Chicago Tribune, Billy Corgan stated that the band will most likely never record a full-length album again.

Talking about the bands latest album, Zeitgeist, Corgan revealed: "We're done with that. There is no point. People don't even listen to it all. They put it on their iPod, they drag over the two singles, and skip over the rest. Our primary function now is to be a singles band that drives Pumpkins Inc through singles. We'll still be creative, but in a different form."

He also added comments on future touring: "We won't do shows like this anymore, where we try to draw a good crowd and balance the past with the present. We'll go small and do exactly what we want to do and stop playing catalog. We'll be like a new band that can't rely on old gimmicks. I'm not stupid. I want people to feel good about what we do. What we weren’t getting was excitement. We’re in the polarizing business. We don’t want a pat on the back: Good to have you back. We want a reaction, even if it’s a negative reaction."

Really I can understand the desire not to be a greatest hits tour band and all. The rest is douchery, but that I can understand. I laughed at the bad marriage and seven bad girlfriends in a row thing. Seems maybe there's something wrong with him and not them...

He's got a point with the singles thing though. The vast majority of people do only listen to singles.

I was gonna post this, but it looks like someone beat me to it ^_^;

I personally think the no more studio albums thing is a bad thing. Unlike what Billy says about people who had it. I LISTENED to Zeitgeist, & I loved it, I still do love it. I understand many on & off SP fans only get into the singles, but many of the hardcore SP fans (like me) like listening to more than that & love listening to the many different songs SP albums have in them

I remember Muse saying at somepoint last year that they were considering being a 'singles' band. What a terrible idea. This Message Edited On 12.11.08

so playing some of their best song live on stage for people who supported them and pay money to see them live is a bad thing??

people only listen to single's.....maybe some, but FANS who you are screwing with are listening to the whole damn thing...thsoe who appreciate music and artists listen to the whole thing.

its ok if you dont want to make albums anymore, but just singles??? atleast something like thrice, EP collection, that is spread over the year or so....

well, i really cant understand what his actual MASTERPLAN behind being a douchebag is???

Wow, this is crazy. I just gained a little bit of respect for Billy Corgan.
But Cream has an excellent point. I'm not a huge fan of SP, but if I was, I'd be pissed. I'm just one of those people that like only a couple of their songs. Sorry. This Message Edited On 12.11.08

I'm interested to see what comes of this. If it gives us material faster, then i'm all for it I guess.

By the way, why is everyone hating on The Smashing Pumpkins? There seems to be this rule on this website that if a band releases one bad album, then they suck. Like with Muse, they really two amazing albums (Origin of Symmetry and Absolution), then they released one mediocre one and now everyone hates them.

Do y'all still take Billy seriously, with anything he says?

Lawl. We'll have that double concept album by the end of the 2009, guaranteed.

Oh, and Billy, we didn't listen to Zeitgeist because your VOCALS SUCKED.

Burning October - Very few people here hate Muse. I'm one of the people who think that BHaR is actually better than Absolution (I don't even like Absolution if I'm honest), but even those who don't agree with me mostly don't hate them.
The reasons that people hate Smashing Pumpkins are (largely):
1. Billy Corgan is a douche.
2. Zeitgeist suggests that there may actually be no more decent material from them in the future.
3. The news article reinforces both of the above points.

Um, yeah, American Gothic sucked.

But SuperChrist, GLOW (to a very lesser extent) are steps in the right direction. The newer stuff they are playing live is excellent, old Pumpkins quality (As Rome Burns, Owata, A Song for a Son), etc.

It is funny to me that Corgan is waxing poetic about staying true etc. This whole new SP thing is more about him making a quick buck than anything else. If really wants to keep it real, then maybe he should retire the SP name once and for all and pursue his self indulgence under his own or another name.

The notion that nobody listens to albums is nonsense. Of course they bloody do. There were always people who only cared about singles or Top 40 tracks and there always will be. There also will always be music lovers who want a body of music from the artist. Corgan is just being a self serving dick with those comments. U dont wanna play music much anymore? fine thats cool. Be honest about it and don't insult our intelligence.

Zeitgeist was terrible. Corgan has become jaded artistically and he knows it.

Why the fuck can't he use his OWN band NAME for his OWN musical endeavors? It's obvious no body cared about his other stuff under different names, and him taking back the name was out of desperation-but HE is THE FUCKING SMASHING PUMPKINS. So it doesn't really matter WTF name he uses. It's his band dumbshit.

ratcfc

He can do whatever he wants, but my point is that the Pumpkins died a while ago and he and the others moved on. Rekindling the name now is clearly about money, as is releasing 4 different copies with 4 different bonus tracks. It is hard to take his musings about artistic integrity et al given these circumstances. Dumbshit? are you 10 years old?

Basically, this means that they've sellouts (if they wern't so already). I hate people like this who just think of music as a business. As long as the music they make is good (preferably, albums) I don't really care tbh. Did like Zeitgeist tho

Zeitgeist had its moments, but on the whole, I wasn't a fan. Billy C has never had a voice, but now he's lost whatever feeling he had back in the Siamese Dream days.

BTW, I hope that when people say that SP minus James and D'arcy != SP, they are suggesting some kind of emotional thing between the band. Musically, D'arcy brought very little, and James, although Billy let him do a thing now and then just to appease him, also didn't bring too much. SP is I'd say 85% musically intact with Billy and Jimmy.

He's persistent, for a bald guy, and I wouldn't be surprised to see him turn out a few more good tunes, before his time is up.

Billy will do anything and make it work. Don't sit there and be like "well that is so stupid!". He is tired of all the stupid 13 years olds buying the album and listening to the singles but not the raw talent on the album. The singles are only supposed to draw you in to the rest of the album.

I'd rather he make singles like he said than make more albums where billy wont feel that its really worth it. People expect bands like the pumpkins to keep releasing new material like their old stuff, but judging by the interview it sounds like hes just not inspired anymore. This Message Edited On 12.23.08
