Katatonia have announced the departure of guitarist and founding member Anders Nyström. The band made the announcement over social media through a post written by Jonas Renske on March 17. This was followed by a statement by Anders the next day. The band appear to cite creative differences as the reason for the split.

It sucks that they're splitting up, but I'm not really a fan of the old stuff Anders is referring to, so I'm glad Katatonia will be pressing forward with the blueprint they have been improving since "Last Fair Deal Gone Down".

Improving might be a stretch when they've been on a decline since dead end kings

Digging back into their roots mightve been just what they needed to breathe a bit of life back into their releases but I guess well never know

Willie expressed my thoughts on the matter pretty well. Shame I never got to see Nystrom play live with the band.

Should've played more December Souls stuff agreed.

The Fall of Hearts objectively disproves they’ve been on the downswing since DEK. That’s quite possibly their best album. I’d agree that City Burials was weak, with SVOS being better.

All of this said, Jonas has been writing the majority of the material in recent years. Idk how much this means in their current state. Anders hasn’t been touring with them either. So…it’s gutting for sentimental reasons, but idk how much it changes the current trajectory.

Bro trying to make an "objective" argument about which album he prefers and it's not even a good one since you just shifted the baseline over by one album and the point still stands otherwise

@Pizzabear: "Improving" might have been the wrong word, because both Dead End Kings and the The Fall Of Hearts were pretty underwhelming, in my opinion. Maybe, "I'm glad Katatonia will be pressing forward with the blueprint they have been working with since Last Fair Deal Gone Down," is a better statement.

However, bigger picture, I'd say they have been improving even with those missteps because City Burials and Sky Void of Stars are both great.

This one is pretty sad bc they seemed inseparable but I definitely understand why it had to happen. At this point, best case scenario for me is that Jonas continues with Katatonia and Anders starts a new goth/death/doom band in the vein of the Dance of December Souls through Last Fair Deal period.
