Thrice's Dead Wake

2022-05-19 by Fernando Alves | 27 Comments
American rockers Thrice have shared a new track, 'Dead Wake', recorded during Horizons/East's sessions. Take a peek at the lyric video below.

Dustin Kensrue comments: " Dead Wake is a tune we were working on during the Horizons/East sessions, but hadn't completed. I've always been fascinated by songs that only have one chord progression, but feel expansive and varied through the use of shifting melodies and layers, and we wanted to play with that format here"

This easily could have been on Alchemy or Beggers. This is good.

Cool idea, the chorus is far too repetitive though!

definitely seems like they were going for a Beggars-y sound on this, plus the lyrics seem like a direct callback to Circles

Continuing that Palms/Deeper Wells trend of some of the best tracks from the sessions ending up as b-sides.

Great song except for that awful chorus. What were you thinking, Dustin?

Anyone else notice how similar the verse vocal melodies and patterns are to The Long Defeat?

Chorus is terrible in my opinion, but literally everything else about the song is great. Bummer

I honestly had no issues with this. Hopefully H/W goes into this direction.

Not a fan of their recent work, but this isn't bad.

I don't mind the vocal tone in the chorus because it reminds me of bands like Frodus or Fear Before. That kind of experimental post-hardcore sound. Works for me in this context.

Chorus grew on me during the second listen. This is a solid track.

I can hear the loose similarity to The Long Defeat, but don't think it's anything crazy. Plus we all know The Long Defeat is tiers above this.

it might have worked better if the hook wasn't so repetitive

That bridge is probably the best thing they've written since The Alchemy Index for me. Great track

It's not really a b-side, they didn't have it finished in time for H/E

It goes hard and that outro is killer but FUCK dude literally sing any melody over that chorus and it would've been better

Chorus is fine. Pretty good song, about on par with most of H/E.

I dig the chorus after reading the Fear Before comparison. Sounds great the final time around with the instrumentals ramped up.

Didn't they have a whole other record ready to go? I seem to remember them saying they were going to put another one out pretty quickly. Hopefully it's a bit more distinct sonically from the previous

I wonder if sputnik is gonna show their newest single "open your eyes and dream". It's far better than this song.
