Mastodon Countdown Ends Thurs.

2009-01-07 by Tyler EMERITUS | 32 Comments
The mysterious countdown on Mastodon's official web site is scheduled to expire at noon this Thursday afternoon. Appearing on the band's official site earlier this week, the countdown is met with no description, leaving fans and news-hungry journalists left to wonder whether its expiration will come with a tour announcement or something more pertinent to their forthcoming release Crack the Skye.

With little in the way of clues, all visitors to the site are given to guess with is a rotating spiral that appears just above the countdown timer. Now, given Crack the Skye's reported fixation on astral travel, wormholes and other pretentious gobbledygook, it's logical to assume that the band is counting down to the release of the album's first single.

Check back tomorrow to see what all the fuss was about. While you wait, feel free to giggle uncontrollably at a statement released by drummer Brann Dailor explaining Crack the Skye's alleged concept:

The story starts with a seed and it grows. It's a multidemensional story. It starts on planet earth, it deals with astral travel, goes to outer space, you get lost and you go on into a wormhole and you start exploring all sorts of Stephen Hawking's theories, space continuum and all that, you go into the spirit realm, you get sucked into another wormhole that brings you into Tsarist Russia and you get put inside Rasputin's body and Rasputin is assassinated and you fly off through the crack in the skye and back through outer space into the devil's dominion, passed him, back into earth and into your body. It's all real natural and it all kind of comes together. We like it. - Brann Dailor

The band has also released a tentative tracklist for the album, which is slated for a first quarter 2009 release on Reprise records.

1.Oblivion
2.Divinations
3.Quintessence
4.The Czar
  • Usurper
  • Escape
  • Martyr
  • Spiral
5.Ghost of Karelia
6.Crack the Skye (featuring Scott Kelly)
7.The Last Baron

This is pretty funny. Especially coming from someone that is such a huge fan of Fortress.

You can't compare songs that take elements from mythology to an album where you fly through a hole in the space-time continuum and end up in Rasputin's body.

Brann is pretty funny.

Hoping that this is: album cover + a song.
Knowing that this will be: probably one of 2009's best albums.

Based solely on that explanation, this album sounds retarded. But it is Mastadon, so it'll probably end up kicking ass.

I really don't like Mastodon at all, but for the love of everything ethereal, earthly and the beyond: keep your elitist opinion to yourself and stick to the news. Please. This Message Edited On 01.07.09

Agreed with Zuzek a few comments up, stick to the news aspect, just cause it sounds scary to you doesn't make it bullshit.

yeah totally PWNED!

And fuck off, I can editorialize all you want. It's in good fun you blubbering vaginas. And jokingly calling it "nonsensical bullshit" isn't an elitist opinion, it's an observation. Pertaining to Fortress, which you little knuckledusters seem to go to at every possible response, I'll say it again: There's a pretty big difference between mythological and historical references and someone falling through a crack in the space time continuum, ultimately landing in Rasputin's body.

Oh and Blood Mountain fucking sucked. I'm just hoping they can go back to their first two albums, which were great. This Message Edited On 01.07.09

i seriously wish they'd stop diving into topics that they don't understand. Blood mountain was evolution, and now this is what, relativity?

If you zoom in close enough on the differences you can make anything seem relatively different. How about they are both hyped metal bands with ridiculous, grandiose album concepts and multi-part songs? That similarity is more striking than any minute differences between elite mythological references and goofy time-space continuum stuff.

Wow. If such heated discussion arose from such a meaningless nuance, one can only wonder how intense this site'll be when the actual album comes out. I won't even need to turn on MTV to get some gratuitous drama. Word! Anyway, although I think this band is starting to get a wee bit played out, I'm still looking forward to this release.

"Oh and Blood Mountain ****ing sucked. I'm just hoping they can go back to their first two albums, which were great."

Hear hear! I wouldn't say it sucked but it sure as hell has nothing on Leviathan, and especially not Remission. I'm sure this will be a fantastic return to form (at least I hope)

Cocaine is actually right this time...

I secretly hoped the name of this news was a clever twist on Mastodon breaking up. The news post is as interesting as Brann's story though.
