Decemberists Explore Wildwood 2026-10-12 by John Marinakis CONTRIBUTOR | 9 Comments | The Decemberists have released The Better Part of Bravery, their first new song since 2024’s As It Ever Was, So It Will Be Again.
The track was written for the closing credits of Wildwood, LAIKA’s forthcoming stop-motion film based on frontman Colin Meloy’s 2011 debut novel, illustrated by Carson Ellis.
Directed by Travis Knight, the adaptation brings Meloy’s fantasy world, set in the forests surrounding Portland, Oregon, to the screen. Its voice cast includes Peyton Elizabeth Lee, Jacob Tremblay, Carey Mulligan, Mahershala Ali and Tom Waits.
Meloy explained that writing the song allowed him to revisit the story through music, while finding common ground between his original vision and Knight’s interpretation.
The Better Part of Bravery appears alongside Dario Marianelli’s original score on the film’s soundtrack, due October 23 through Decca Records. The film opens in theaters the same day.

I'm currently stoked to see this movie.
| | | Song is good
| | | It's good but pretty standard Decemberists fare at this point. Haven't been seriously impressed with an album of theirs since The King is Dead. Even the strumming pattern sounds like a rehash of old tunes.
I'm really interested in how this movie does. It feels like it has been promoted to the nth degree and Liaka commonly doesn't have this amount of "hype" (whether real or artificial is the question) for a stop-motion movie. I remember enjoying the first book but wasn't compelled to finish the trilogy even though I own signed copies of the entire set.
| | | These days Laika is owned by Nike's owners so they've got deep pockets to promote the movie.
| | | I don’t know anything about this movie but the song is great
| | | Yeah, I've heard Laika is just a pet project for Travis Knight as his dad bankrolls his productions.
| | | Christbate you're not wrong, but because we live in hell this nepo guy is one of the few people left preserving the art form of stopmotion animation, certainly within "mainstream" or studio filmmaking.
Track is definitely typical Decemberists, not a bad thing in my book but I see your point about the strumming pattern and it being same-y

It's probably one of the very few examples of nepotism that I won't immediately side-eye. It's very clear that Knight has a true passion for the medium and I have consistently loved what Laika has put out. But there's some truly talented folks working smaller scale even if stop-motion, in general, has sort of fallen out of favor with general audiences. I think Wildwood will do good numbers, as far as a Laika productions are concerned, but I don't foresee some stop-motion renaissance considering it's a creative venture that is high-difficulty and low-reward.
Also, his strumming pattern on the new track is pulled directly from June Hymn.
| | | Well put, Christbait. Travis Knight may be a nepo baby, but Laika is putting out great content under his watch and direction. Wildwood will be the longest and most expensive stop-motion film released in a time when stop-motion barely exists anymore. If it weren't for Nike money, we wouldn't be getting this movie (or if we did, it wouldn't be remotely on this scale).
