Pavlov's Dog Mourn Surkamp 2026-10-15 by John Marinakis CONTRIBUTOR | 0 Comments | David Surkamp, the founding vocalist, guitarist and principal songwriter of Pavlov’s Dog, died unexpectedly on October 13.
Violinist and mandolin player Abbie Steiling announced his passing on behalf of the band. No cause of death was disclosed.
Her tribute remembered Surkamp’s poetic sensibility, generosity toward his fellow musicians and dedication to performing. She also offered condolences to his children, Saylor and Evan, and the wider Surkamp family.
Surkamp helped establish Pavlov’s Dog in St. Louis in the early 1970s. His distinctive high-register vocals became central to their sound on 1975’s Pampered Menial, produced by Sandy Pearlman and Murray Krugman, and its 1976 follow-up, At the Sound of the Bell.
Following the band's initial breakup, he worked with Iain Matthews in Hi-Fi before returning to Pavlov’s Dog through subsequent reunions. Later releases included Lost in America, Echo & Boo and Prodigal Dreamer.
His wife and fellow Pavlov’s Dog musician Sara Surkamp died in 2025.
