Slipknot Reload Their Arsenal

2026-09-10 by John Marinakis CONTRIBUTOR | 59 Comments
Slipknot have surprise-released Arsenal, their first new song in over three years.
The single marks the recording debut of former Sepultura drummer Eloy Casagrande, who joined Slipknot in 2024. It is also the band's first new material following the departures of Sid Wilson and Craig Jones.

Arsenal inaugurates another important chapter as Slipknot's first release through their own (sic)est Records label, following the conclusion of their long-standing partnership with Roadrunner Records.

Corey Taylor described the track as a concentrated representation of the band's musical identity, moving between bursts of hyperactivity and a crushing final breakdown. Arsenal premiered as the Hottest Record on BBC Radio 1's New Music Show with Jack Saunders.

The accompanying video was directed by percussionist M. Shawn Clown Crahan and stars actor Jackson White. A limited seven-inch edition featuring a Tribal S etching on its B-side will begin shipping on September 28.

Slipknot have not yet confirmed whether Arsenal will appear on a forthcoming album. Their most recent studio record remains 2022's The End, So Far.

Fires Sid and then releases a song with more scratching on it than I can remember in recent history. Makes sense. Song is complete ass though. If the rest of the album is similar it will end up with ratings average somewhere in the 1's.

Every descriptor being used to describe this song has been hyperbolic to the nth degree. It's not hyperactive, there are no crushing breakdowns; it is a very weak try-hard song that does the opposite of what it intends to do. It's not forging a new path for the band, it's throwing every Slipknot trope at the wall to pretend this band has even an ounce of the same aggression they used to have.

Worth saying Jim Root is now claiming the song won't appear on the next album. But this and A7X is kind of proving some acts *need* a record label to keep them in line, going independent is letting them go out of control with their ideas and they're not necessarily good ones.

IMO it feels like they're throwing shit at the wall to see what sticks in order to appear more creative but all it amounts to is a whole bunch of unfinished ideas being haphazardly thrown together to create the façade of a complete song. All the press sounds like AI and their Spotify bio is just straight up ChatGPT slop nowadays too. Nobody's proofread it.

That intro with Eloy is pretty good. I will say while this song isn't their best clearly, it's not their worst. I think the bones of a solid song exist, it just doesn't all come together. Moving forward who knows what to expect. It's a shame that they bring on Eloy at a time when Corey and Clown continue to look like controlling assholes. I do believe them when they said getting rid of Jay was a creative decision. Eloy gives them the best shot to write much more dynamic shit than they could ever with Jay. Let's be honest, Jay was solid but he was limited to just straight drive and stomp grooves, not allowing them to write anything close to anything on S/T and Iowa. Hopefully Corey and Shawn can stop being egotistical dick heads for just one album.

Corey has always struck me as a super cool dude outside the creative and business decisions of Slipknot. Clown though always has seemed like he's been huffing his own farts.

You can always just, you know, not care. This is indeed obnoxious but Statica is a different situation because the band had enough common sense to label it as a side project - retroactively but it still counts.

What is everyone talking about, this isn't that far removed from some of their other percussion-heavy songs aside from having a Knocked Loose ish breakdown. I'd take this over Psychosocial any day of the week.

The problem is that Slipknot and Iowa were conceived in a world before the band's influence was omnipresent. Ross Robinson wanted the craziest shit put on tape to really make a statement. There's not really that sense of direction anymore. At least this song doesn't have an awful clean chorus.

Solway Firth, Prosthetics, Duality, etc. are also percussion-heavy tracks but they actually sound like they have structure, flow well, and has a discernible riff. The new track is like they went back to MFKR and took all the wrong lessons from it. They're trying to be experimental but it sounds directionless. Plus the mid-song "hey stop the fucking music stop stahhhp" is laughable. It seems inserted into the track because the band couldn't think of a natural transition into the breakdown. It just sounds like weak songwriting.

First two albums are the best nu metal has to offer. When nu metal fell out of style and they pivoted to some all-encompassing sort of 2000s groove/alt metal, they lost me. At least this sounds kinda different but maybe I'm being generous.

Come off it. The band haven’t been shy about how they see themselves as a ‘brand’, which can be continued after they are gone. This garbage has absolutely nothing to do with having too much ‘creative freedom’; it’s the opposite.

Corey and Clown run the show, that much is clear and has been evidenced multiple times over the years. Whatever they want to do stylistically with the band, they get to do. But you cannot convince me that this band actually approaches music as an artform anymore. It's been a business where the music is just a means of getting their fanbase to buy-in through merch, tickets, etc. It's the pulse of the profits.

butt.
