Founding member and longtime guitarist of The Grateful Dead, Bob Weir, passed away on January 10, 2026 according to a recent posting on Bob Weir's website

https://bobweir.net/bobby/

According to his website:

"It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of Bobby Weir. He transitioned peacefully, surrounded by loved ones, after courageously beating cancer as only Bobby could. Unfortunately, he succumbed to underlying lung issues...

...His loving family, Natascha, Monet, and Chloe, request privacy during this difficult time and offer their gratitude for the outpouring of love, support, and remembrance. May we honor him not only in sorrow, but in how bravely we continue with open hearts, steady steps, and the music leading us home. Hang it up and see what tomorrow brings."

Bob Weir joined The Grateful Dead after meeting Jerry Garcia at a music store in 1963. The two decided to form a band, with it being officially called The Grateful Dead after going through other names like "Mother McCree's Uptown Jug Champions" and "The Warlocks".

Known for his rhythm guitar playing and cowboy tinted lyrics, Bob Weir became instrumental in helping establish The Grateful Dead's sound. He remained a member until the bands dissolution in 1995, but continued to do live shows up until his death.

May he Rest in Peace.

He may have gone to Hell in a Bucket, but at least he enjoyed the ride. Godspeed Bobby.
