British singer/songwriter Chris Rea has passed away at the age of 74.

According to a statement issued by his family, he "died peacefully at the hospital, surrounded by his relatives".

Born and raised from an Italian father and an Irish mother in Middlesbrough, Rea swiftly moved up the echelons of the music industry to a solo career that sold over 30 million albums.

His most know albums are The Road To Hell featuring the namesake hit single, and the followup full-length Auberge.

His music was referred to as 'dire Rea' in our household back in the day but as you said, still a nostalgia legend.

Died peacefully, that's good. I've been hearing his works on the radio since... always, I think. Blue Cafe, Looking for the Summer and Driving Home for Christmas are eternally great listens.

He loved cars so much, he had a stint in F1 in the '90s.

Man, that's so cool. Didn't know about it.
...now I view his songs about driving in a slightly different light.
