Eugene Robinson leaves Oxbow 2024-07-08 by Raul Stanciu STAFF | 25 Comments | Vocalist and founding member, Eugene S. Robinson announced on his blog that he is leaving Oxbow. He created the project in 1988, recording Fuckfest as a suicide note. During the process, Robinson was joined by guitarist Niko Wenner, who played in his previous band, Whipping Boy.
Most recently, besides touring with Mr. Bungle in Europe, the group reportedly put the finishing touches on Love's Holiday's follow-up LP:
"From Fuckfest we went on to do seven more full length records plus EPs, compilations and last year a live record with recently deceased free jazz great Peter Brotzmann. We also just put the finishing touches on our next record, Follow Me Now In Merry Measure, the fourth produced by Joe Chiccarelli, our Grammy winning producer."
However, they cancelled the last five gigs without explanation, until now:
"Though we did have one festival in France, Bourlon to be exact, where at least 1000 people seemed to be in place to hear what kind of craziness we’d be spewing, the day and night of it all was just so deliciously Oxbowian, it approached perfection.
But there’s also negative perfection and there is this as well since after 36 years of creative work I can’t think of anything more horrible than to have to face the fact that I am now like Dr Dre. Not in the I Am a Billionaire part, but in the part where he left Death Row records. I remember him famously being called on to explain why he left and since he was dealing with Suge Knight, a man who if he wasn't already in prison for killing someone might have actually killed some other one, he was...circumspect.
Circumspect, though he did say some version of this: you ever go to a party, and you start to get uncomfortable, and then you get so uncomfortable that you have to leave? That's why I left Death Row.
While I don't feel that my life is being threatened, my physical life, I do feel, under the weight of irreconcilable differences, none of them aesthetic or musical, that I now must leave OXBOW. Recent circumstances have caused me several dark nights of the soul and while it feels/seems crazy to kill my involvement in that which I started, I think it necessary so that maybe a kind of healing can take place that will make OXBOW a comfortable place for me to be again. If not, then not.
So the last five shows of the tour were scrapped and I’m sitting in a cheap hotel in Fuengirola, Spain, thinking of how the band began, and how the last video we just released from Love’s Holiday was so aptly named. “All Gone” it was and perhaps seems to be."

On the upside, Robinson's project BUNUEL is releasing a double album in September, Mansuetude, as well as an LP called, Mangene: 101 Atomic Terms and What They Mean in November.

Well that certainly wasn't particularly clear. But I guess it doesn't need to be. Hope he feels better soon and will be looking forward to his new project for sure.
| | | A proper shame this, but putting aside any personal disappointment I just hope Eugene benefits from the break and it allows him to concentrate on his other project (saying a "break" this might be it for the band tbh - if it is, then I'll consider myself lucky for having caught them live and we have plenty of incredible material already).
Top top band

| | | Eugene noooooooo
| | | wasn’t super sold on this band until i saw them live last year (went to see Whores who opened for them). Sad to see eugene go, the band won’t be the same without him
| | | Iwas a bit late to the party with these guys (Thin Black Duke-era) but man, this is disappointing. Love's Holiday was great, as is all their noise. Sad.
| | | Didn’t know that about fuckfest. Oxbow is effectively done and if they continue without him imma be furious.
Secret time I’ve only ever listened to thin black duke- where do I go from here?
| | | 'Secret time I’ve only ever listened to thin black duke- where do I go from here?'
just listen to all of their albums in whatever order you feel like. Narcotic story is quite accessible if you want to ease into things. An evil heat is one of their best. Let me be a woman has some pretty straightforward noise rock/post hardcore tracks im quite fond of.
all their stuff is good tho
| | | ^ you can't really go wrong even if An Evil Heat is their peak imo and Serenade my #2
Narcotic Story / Love's Holiday are perhaps their most accessible outside of TBD, although it depends on your tastes
| | | Odd statement, Eugene clearly having a rough one. I wish him the best.
| | | Ain't no good news
| | | I scrolled past this article too fast earlier and thought he’d died for a hot second
Softened the blow a little bit, but maaaan do I LOVE Oxbow…
| | | Saw a post from him saying people need to get help if they need it, hope hes ok. I know that's not worth much but it's all a keyboard warrior can do right now. Eugene is a badass so I'd like to think hes got this
| | | Yeah a proper shame this, loved seeing them live. His newsletter could have certainly been less cryptic about things, but I can't blame the guy if he doesn't feel like pointing any fingers. I hope he's okay though, and wish him nothing but the best. The man is a real treasure.
| | | Too bad, I recently discovered this band through Love's Holiday and I was like "this band is awesome, wonder if they have more albums"... and then I hit the jackpot. I guess whatever is best for Eugene should be the path he follows, 36 years to commit to a project is one hell of a ride.
| | | theoretically, they will have another album if they don't reconsider.
| | | Not the best news, but I'm so glad Eugene is leaving on a relative high note musically (not to mention hopefully departing on his own terms). Every Oxbow record is special and a treasure in its own way

"Niko Wenner, Oxbow update.
An accusation was leveled at me, Niko, during our 2024 European tour.
It’s probably not appropriate for me to give details since the allegation is still unresolved. The alleged incident, said to have occurred in a crowd, involved only myself and the person making the accusation. None of the others in Oxbow were there.
The accusation led to the cancellation of the last 4 shows of our tour, all in France.
I have always greatly enjoyed playing in France and I apologize to anyone who had intentions of seeing us there.
Eugene Robinson has at least for now left the band, as he has already made public in his latest substack article.
As it stands now Oxbow as a band no longer exists. Whether this is a permanent state of affairs remains to be seen.
Niko"
| | | oh dear, this is very weird and worrying
strange he says in a crowd. as in, at an oxbow gig?
| | | during a tour, in a crowd... yeah seems like it on the surface
hmm, of course until we know further details we can withhold any concrete opinions (or outrage) but the fact Eugene left because of the accusation / they cancelled the last 4 shows is certainly concerning
| | | damn this shit just hit a brick wall huh

| | | 'So sitting in Basque Country in Spain where I’ve been filming new videos for BUNUEL’s next (and fourth) record, Mansuetude, that features Duane Denison, Jacob Bannon and Megan O. on it, I am thinking forward to touring the states on it, and beyond Europe, I think I am OK.'
megan o of couch slut? dope
| | | they played with couch slut when i saw em, that set was legit painful holy shit, singer was on shrooms and was having a hard time lol
| | | I respect the need for privacy when serious allegations are levelled but the messy bitch in me is screaming at the lack of detailed gossip.
