lmao @ this thread. I’m gonna be huddled in my closet injecting this music into my veins on release day though. Pirated or streamed. A nice birthday present on this, the month of my birth. These guys haven’t dropped a dud in damn near 20 years. I personally think it’s hard to pick and choose around nazi ties in bm, like damn near every band (realistically 50%) has nazis members or bumps shoulders with nazis and doesn’t say nearly enough against it. Black metal has always been a political & moral shitshow, apart from RABM, which I wish there were more cool examples of that were on the musical level of something like DSO. It’s a scene born from a group of unoppressed antisocial nationalist xenophobic assholes with no idea how to process their emotions, so they burned churches in a half-athiest country where religion wasn’t even stifling them and do fuck shit like kill gay people and take pictures of their own friends’ corpses post-suicide. A lot of songs do slap tho, and parts of the aesthetic are cool. I think that’s what fans from every spectrum agree on. My advice is take the good parts you can from music you like and fuck the rest. And don’t deify musicians, they’re just people and a ton of them are just shitty, in all genres.

I’d say the former. Shame, because the guitarist is massively talented and when I had a listen to their last album, it was the best they’d ever sounded production and mix wise. The daft thing is, Aspa is not even close to being integral to their sound and I reckon if they cut ties with him completely, a lot of people would be willing to give them another chance and pretend he was never there on account of how much they enjoy the actual music! Even in critical spaces, I’ve noticed they get a lot more leeway than other bands e.g. “The lyrics aren’t promoting his views, so at least there’s that”. The whole idea that his presence causes ‘creative conflict’ is just complete nonsense and just a convenient cop out for collaborating with an overt fascist.

On the note of neo Nazis and whatnot my ex worked at Valvoline years back and I got pretty cool with Keenan, one of her coworkers. We'd sit and smoke and bump some NWA, Three 6 Mafia and Eazy E pretty frequently. Dude seemed real laid back and chill and we had some good conversations over the years. One day I woke up to him all over the news for shooting someone execution style on the outskirts of my town. Apparently he was part of a very extreme neo Nazi group in my area and they thought the kid they shot had snitched on them and tipped off a local meth dealer on their plans to kick in his door and rob him. Keegan was the one that pulled the trigger.

It blew my mind that he was even associated with anything like that let alone heavily involved like he was. Seemed like a good, stand up guy all around and he was towards the end of the process of becoming a military police officer which is pretty terrifying considering what happened. It's insane how incognito some of the people involved in these groups are in their day to day lives. I'm one of those people who separate the art from the artists in almost every case but I'm not gonna lie I did feel betrayed in some kind of way by befriending this dude considering his ties.
