R.I.P. Ian McDonald

Legendary British rock saxophonist and flautist Ian McDonald has passed away at the age of 75. According to the Rolling Stone press release, McDonald "passed away peacefully on February 9, 2022 in his home in New York City, surrounded by his family". The cause of death is currently unknown.

McDonald is best remembered as the co-founder of King Crimson and Foreigner, both of which he was a frequent contributor during their early years. His songwriting and instrumental work on In the Court of the Crimson King are of particular note, proving to be influential to a entire legion of progressive rock groups for decades to come. This includes the iconic sax bridge on "21st Century Schizoid Man", the whimsical flute leads found on "I Talk to the Wind", as well as being the sole composer of the album's title track. However, he was no slouch in Foreigner either; songs such as "Long, Long Way from Home" and "Double Vision" simply wouldn't be the same without his sax and guitar skills. McDonald was also a prolific session player, working with the likes of T. Rex, Steve Hackett, Linda Lewis, Herbie Mann, and several more.

Check out the video below to hear McDonald's contributions on the classic "21st Century Schizoid Man":

Another great musician left us. He was a very complete musician that I always admired. He will be always linked with the birth of prog with the debut of King Crimson. RIP hard.
