Dio's Sabbath unreleased song

2021-03-10 by JP Patino Izquierdo | 10 Comments
Gary Rees (stepson of the late Geoff Nicholls, who was the keyboardist for the legendary heavy metal band Black Sabbath) has uploaded an unreleased song by Black Sabbath from when Dio was a member of the group. The song is an outtake from the Heaven and Hell sessions.

"Slapback", named that way by Rees from the chorus of the song and what he could understand from the scribbles on the tape, might be one of the oldest recordings of Dio's time in Black Sabbath (dating back to 1979).

While the song is far from perfect, it still retains Dio's powerful and catchy voice and showcases Tony Iommi's classic soloing.

What's interesting is that the piece doesn't sound at all like the Black Sabbath people would come to know in the early 80's. Dio's voice is closer to his Rainbow days and Iommi's riffing follows the style of Never Say Die!. This makes "Slapback" a really interesting historical piece, as it shows the sound of a band that was still trying to find a new identity with their new vocalist, who had recently replaced Ozzy Osbourne.

As someone who is admittedly in the minority thinking Dio Sabbath was the best Sabbath, this was such a treat to listen to.

The rehearsal for H&H's t/t released a few days ago was also pretty cool. Wish they could've used its ending on live renditions of the songs

yeah Heaven and Hell is the best sabbath album
I’m probably in the super minority in thinking paranoid is barely a top 5 sabbath record.

I mean, Paranoid is my undisputed pick for Sabbath's best album, but Heaven and Hell is a close second

It’s still kick ass, but man I’ll take Master of Reality, Mob Rules, or Dehumanizer over it any day.

Even Vol 4 and Sabbath Bloody Sabbath give it a run for its money

I dunno, Heaven and Hell is vastly overrated in my book. something like 6th best Sabbath (behind their first 5).

That said, this is a decent jam!
