Lou Reed Is Completely Ugly 2007-04-11 by Dave de Sylvia EMERITUS | 19 Comments | Veteran rock critic Nick Kent has launched an attack on grump rock legend Lou Reed, dubbing him "repugnant."
The ex-NME journo timed his outburst well to coincide with the re-launch of his latest book, but he didn't end with Reed. Queen and Iggy Pop also landed on the end of his ire. "Iggy Pop's new album is basically a 60-year-old man singing about his cock," he declared. "And that is more information than I require. I've told him, 'Why do you have to get your cock out on stage?' Soon he's going to be like Hugh Hefner, a walking advertisement for Viagra."
Queen were given the backhanded honour of having given rise to punk. "'Bohemian-fucking-Rhapsody' was Number One for nine weeks - people were like, 'If this is Number One for one more week I'm going to kill myself - or start a band'," he explained. "Most people started bands, and that's how punk was born."
It seems the whip was being spared for Reed, however, who'd probably have settled for a backhanded comment in the end. "It's a hate/hate thing. I think he's completely ugly, repugnant. You have to be utterly sycophantic to get anywhere with him," Kent stated. "I'd like to get a gun and shoot the bastard."
