"faux black metal..."

Sigh, I remember being a 20 year old music elitist too. Then I realized I should quit being such an asshole. My life is much better now, son. This track is awesome, by the way.

Relatively few BM bands in North America wear corpse paint, from what I can tell.

Sooo half the album has been leaked then?

Two songs, from what I count? That's a bit less than half.

what is metal about this?

Call it screamo if you can't seriously call it black metal. Hardly matters.

With other weird bands like Bosse-de-Nage pushing into post-rock/shoegaze/post-punk territory, hard genre tags start becoming less appropriate. Sunbather is black metal that's less-than-black.

i don't really understand why so many people say deafheaven aren't black metal. there's always going to be the kvlter-than-thou types that are butthurt because their genre of choice that has long been dominated by hairy basement welders is now being played by hipster pretty boys and covered on sites like pitchfork, and to an extent i can understand why they wouldn't be eager to accept a band like this. but looking strictly at the music and not the image, it just don't understand how it's not black metal. of course there's a lot of other influences in their music from other genres (screamo, post-rock, shoegaze) so it's not gonna sound like burzum or mayhem or darkthrone or whatever, but all of their stylistic wanderings are still layed over a core foundation of tremolo riffs, blast beats, and tortured shrieks with trebley production. i can see why elitists wouldn't dig it but to say it's not black metal at all is just kind of silly to me.

It is bm and anyone saying otherwise is retarded. With that said, Sunbather contains a whole lot of butt-fucking faggotry.

Just to comment on that band, they're the best of this so called "pretty" black metal. They write some catchy as fuck songs.

To my knowledge, there are screamo bands that do these exact same things. Imo, the confusion seems warranted to an extent.

You fanboy'd all over their new album. We know, we know!! :P And they are a very good example of black metal that's hardly "black," and in many places barely "metal."

screamo bands rarely do blast beats for longer than a few seconds at a time. deafheaven definitely sound somewhere between bm and screamo, but i have a hard time figuring out exactly why. i think it mainly has to do with the drumming and the clean sections.

Ha! It begins!

Well, if you want me to be bluntly honest, they blew their load on the first track 'Dream House' and then the album weakens as you listen on. I don't know if I can justify over a 3 cuz it's good and that's about it.

really? i feel like the highlight is definitely "vertigo" but tbh the whole thing works for me. just surprised you would like the opener the most, since i think that one actually sounds less 'metal' than the other ones if that makes sense.

screamo bands rarely do blast beats for longer than a few seconds at a time.

Then they're breaking new ground for the genre! :D

deafheaven definitely sound somewhere between bm and screamo, but i have a hard time figuring out exactly why.

The vocals. And the melodic/clean parts. Lots of hardcore bands have picked up on the clean "post-rock" sound (or whatever you call it) so that plus Deafheaven's general lack of abrasiveness makes this sound less metal, imo.
