Foo Fighters on hiatus

2012-10-02 by Sconza | 177 Comments
Foo Fighters frontman, Dave Grohl, has said at a show in New York recently that "Without making a big deal out of it, we don't have any shows after this. This is it, man. Honestly I don't know when we're gonna do it again…and this is the perfect place to do it."

Youre not making any substantial point here, and youre not clever.

If someone asks you about something, say, toothpaste, then they would want to know what you think of it.

In the case of metal and hardcore, which this site has an obvious bias towards (whether good or bad), I think its fucking awful.

Theres no other way to answer that. I dont know, youre I guess, trying to imply that I think it sucks, thus meaning I dont truly know? Metal and hardcore, do absolutely nothing for me other than want to get people into better music. Theres no substance to it. At all. The fact that theres an entire site devoted to it, makes me have less faith in the human race. As if somehow everyone else's music taste "out there" (be it popular/historical/influential) is shit compared to yours or the majority on this site, and this place is really where its at!...

Music elitists that are metal and hardcore fans, is hilarious in itself.

Basically, anything I read in the news section on here gets blasted because its either too popular, too soft, not heavy enough, not metal enough, they dont use a double kick, they dont fucking scream, X band needs to go back to doing this or that (a common complaint, thus completely handicapping said band's creativity), etc.

Ive browsed long enough.

Folk and Blues are cool but they arent exactly the freshest genres out there. Not sure why you're surprised people arent falling over themselves to hear the latest blues album. The old stuff is great but who exactly is doing something cool in blues thats worth talking about? Joe Bonamassa? The bigger folk acts get their respect here for the most part, but again just listening to a guy and an acoustic isnt the most exciting thing I guess since we've heard it a million times.

I agree with you on Jazz but like blues its heydey was 50 years ago. While Hip Hop gets love here and I like that too, but a lot of people dont want to just hear a dude rapping over a repetitive beat.

But yea this site is biased towards rock and metal. For good reason IMO as those are my favorite genres, even if I like the shit you listed too. If you dont like it go to Worldstarhiphop or some shit.

Its quite possible, but from what I have seen, and I have tried some digging, there isnt much.

Joe Bonamassa I actually know, since hes from my town.

I have nothing else to do either. Ive been browsing this site a while and overall, ive just noticed an extremely heavy bias towards certain things, most notably those two genres.

Good to know Calc.

I come to this site to read news sometimes, and reviews, and half the time its just teenagers bitching "your music taste sucks bro", etc. etc. Just write the fucking music reviews. Nobody cares about your shitty HS band or bantering between whose taste sucks and whose doesnt, or whose music rankings suck, etc.

I do appreciate heavy music, and screaming actually, but doing it for the sake of just doing it, no. Any dipshit can do that.

The real question is, is it something we're going to look back on as a piece to a timeless record? Wheres its place in music history on the whole? Metal and hardcore have its place in music history, but its not anything substantial IMO. Certainly not over something like say, Bob Dylan or The Beatles. I think theyre overrated, but you can see why their influence is so pervasive on music history.

Nothing's ever going to be as big and universally accepted as Bob Dylan or the Beatles ever again, thought. The music industry has changed. Back then, the radio pretty much exclusively determined who was being listened to, whereas now, with the changing environment, it has opened up a lot of new highways, and diversified the music industry as whole. So basically, there's always going to be plenty of alternatives to the mainstream bands, and thus, they won't gain as much popularity, relatively speaking, even if they are hugely popular. We're never going to see another Pink Floyd, or Led Zeppelin, or The Who, or any of those classic bands from a few decades ago.

Its perfectly fine to come on to bitch about people bitching.

All im doing is mentioning the terrible bias on this site. Someones gotta point it out. It may look hypocritical, but that shouldnt keep you from saying it.

I come on here to read reviews and news, not read "your favorite band sucks bro!!! sit on a cock!!" Shut the fuck up with this. (Oh look, more irony, right? Again, someones gotta do it)

Theres nothing elitist about being a metal or hardcore fan anyway. Sorry.

I think there are a lot worse things out in the world than a user/staff based website that has bias towards certain genres of music. So much hostility over such a trivial thing...

Also, you could just ignore the comment sections since that seems to be your biggest problem with it. You can still get music news and album reviews without reading any of that extra stuff. That's what I did before I became a user on the site.

Or you can just argue with a bunch of random people on the internet.

I don't think you understand what elitist means, not to mention it's used as a derigatory term now a days anyway, so who cares.

Also, weren't you leaving?

I don't think hiatus is the right word, it's more like taking a break. To me, hiatus implies the chance of the band not getting back together, Grohl wrote that they definately will be back though. Can't wait for them to get back at it again anyways.

It's amazing that anything on this site ever gets rated higher than a 1. Everyone hates everything…

On another note, rumor has it that Dave Grohl will be drumming on Queens of the Stone Age's new album. Fingers crossed.

When were Green Day ever not commercial/corporate?

Dave betrayed the spirit of Nirvana by IMMEDIATELY starting to write pop singles for teen girls. As in, barely a year after Nirvana ended. Plus band haven't been good since TINLTL, and even then they had like two good songs.

Green day were not a big commercial band until Dookie(arguably).
They were huge in the underground scene with their first 2 albums.

Nirvana was never "Dave's band", it's arguable how much input he actually had in the band, after all he was "just" a drummer and not a founding member

immediately started writing pop singles for teenage girls? KILL is gonna be pissed if he sees this and he would tell you to go listen to their self-titled

"Plus band haven't been good since TINLTL, and even then they had like two good songs."

LOL Learn To Fly & Monkey Wrench were all over the radio when I was 13. Also, Dave wrote Marigold, a lost Nirvana track.

@youtellme, yeah but they've been since then. Nirvana never wanted to be, although they were after Nevermind (kinda).

lol @ "the spirit of Nirvana"

It's funny to see the cognitive dissonance of people who call Foo Fighters overrated and then praise Nirvana in their next breath. Those four elementary power chords and a shotgun later, and Nirvana has so much more spirit. Put down the rose-tinted glasses.

I knew not to take you seriously as soon as I saw you had an AC/DC thumbnail. AC/DC, Nirvana, Green Day. It's like a middle school kid who's just started taking guitar lessons. It's OK to move on from your middle school tastes, bro. Don't get too hung up learning Master of Puppets.

Lots of good educated and levelheaded recent posts, and im 100% honest.

This AC/DC guy obviously has no fucking clue what hes talking about.

The band owns their fucking catalog. Theyre on their own fucking label. Always have been. Nobody tells them what to do but themselves, creatively. As KILL pointed out, theyre old school musicians from undeground scenes that have been successful, but it hasnt tainted their ethos. They try to incorporate as much of their roots and influences into their current work as possible. They know their niche, and stick to it. Theyre staying true to themselves and to their music. They released 'Wheels' and people freaked out. Sure, its not a good song, but it was their attempt to try something new, and Tom Petty is a big influence on them. If you saw the documentary, youd know that. They dont care about whats trendy or whats popular, they stick to themselves. Thats something that is just lost on so many people.

They use RCA for distribution purposes, only.

and for the fucking record, Cobain wanted to be a rock star. That whole anti-rock star image thats portrayed by the media is complete bullshit.

"Smells Like Teen Spirit = still heavier than 95% of Foo Fighters.

Whats your point?

Heavy doesnt automatically equal being good. If you judge an entire bands' catalog based on it being heavy or not, then youre a massive fuckwit.

As if Dave sucks because he uses piano and Kurt didnt? Some of the greatest music doesnt come near being heavy.

There are a shit ton of soft songs I would take over heavy songs, and that goes for anything.

Kids these days obviously have a different perception of music, especially rock, at least to me.

Im a lot older than most probably on this site, so all of these bands I view differently, and props to whoever mentioned Dave's roots, which are...

FROM THE DC HARDCORE SCENE.

Its also hilarious to see people accuse Dave of being about money. The most unsophisticated, blue-collar, down to earth musician in rock. You fellas need to read some books.
