Josh Eppard Rejoins Coheed

2011-11-16 by oh trudy, youre with the meanest boy in the hills STAFF | 77 Comments
New York's Coheed and Cambria posted an update on their website to announce that Josh Eppard has re-joined the band following Chris Pennie's recent departure. Eppard previously played on the band's first three LPs (The Second Stage Turbine Blade, In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth: 3, and Good Apollo, I'm Burning Star IV, Volume One...). The band also confirmed that it would be returning to the studio to record it's sixth LP, and would be reuniting with producers Michael Birnbaum and Chris Bittner (who produced all three of the aforementioned LPs):

Quote:
November 16, 2011.

Hello everybody,

We didn’t originally plan to make a big splash about this, but when Chris made his announcement, we were ultimately compelled to. We didn’t want anyone to be concerned about the state of the band, and trying to keep things quiet was proving to be really tough. And besides, we're just really excited and wanted to share that feeling with you.

Chris Pennie is a dear friend, a superb band-mate and one of the best drummers in the world. He brought a workmanship and sense of professionalism to Coheed that completely improved us as a band, and allowed us to reach new heights. He will always be a member of the Coheed family, and we ask you to support all his endeavors.

As the songs for the new record began twisting into shape, it slowly became apparent that these songs were very dynamic, and could truly flourish with the groove-oriented approach that Josh naturally brings to the table. We also missed Josh as a person -what he meant to us as friends and the energy and humor he exudes. But this isn’t about nostalgia; it’s about who we are now, and what we can achieve musically and as a family, together going forward.

We understand there are risks involved bringing Josh back into the fray. Even with his two-years of sobriety, this is a giant leap of faith on our part. But at the end of the day, we have all grown up, and we have all been through so much, that playing with Josh again is sort of like coming home. It's comfortable, it's familiar, it just feels right… it’s hand in glove.

Last week, we entered Applehead Studios with Michael Birnbaum and Chris Bittner to begin work on our sixth studio album. We’re three songs in, can’t wait to share it.

Thank you for your continued, unwavering support.

Sweet. He may not be as technical as Pennie, but the guy knew how to groove, they're right about that.

Interested to see how the next record sounds, still gonna be weird without Mic Todd

TBH, as stoked I am for Josh to return, I'm perhaps even more stoked that the guys who produced their first three records are back to produce this new one. They just seem to get how Coheed should sound better than anyone else.

Great news, Eppard's style just fits so well with this band. Pennie was just being held back stylistically imo.

also, Quen's avatar > anything....ever.

Vol II was weak as hell for the most part too.

But yeah this is great news. Pennie is technically better but Josh worked with them in their best days so it's good to see him back. Coheed's been down for a bit now but I'd love to see them come back with something epic, I still think they have a bit left in them if they can focus and bring it together right. Come on Claudio.

"mics never coming back lol not after the shit he pulled"

Kind of agree... Didn't expect Josh to join either, but I feel like Mic just went too damn far. But damn if they had their original 4 I'd be REALLY interested in what they would release. But I also feel like Mic's gotten into some shit to the point where even if it were the core 4 members it wouldn't be close to the same.

I was personally offended by "Year Of The Black Rainbow." I don't give two shits who plays drums or produces, so long as the next LP sounds nothing like that last flaming heap of human shit. Come on, Claudio. I know you have at least one more good album in you, somewhere. Get back to the riffing.

I don't prefer Chris over Josh or vice versa; they're both great in respective ways. Pennie is obviously more technical, and is a hell of a talented guy, but Josh worked better with the rest of the band and had more groove. Anyway, I love every album they've done so new one should be just as awesome.

Guns of Summer was a mess anyway, it just wasn't Coheed with Chris Pennie, as brilliant as he is (that drum solo on Neverender: The Final Cut was mind-blowing), the band are better back to their old roots.

I'm really psyched for this. Josh seemed like a really charismatic guy, and he brought a nice simplicity to Coheed that kinda grounded them. Wonder what the next album will be like.
