As far as song writing goes, I always thought Petrucci was better than Portnoy anyway, so DT are still very capable in that department. As much of a fan as I am of both DT and Portnoy, he shouldn't be back in DT this early, the split had to happen for a reason, not just for Mike to come crying back when things don't work out elsewhere.

Actually, what he told them was that he didn't want to go back into the studio in January or tour for it afterwards. So, it doesn't really matter that they weren't actively touring or recording because the fact is that he was set to shut them down once they started.

He never left DT for A7X. He left them because he wanted a break 'cause of all the stuff he did (producing, tour planning and so on and so forth) and they didn't. He said he loved playing with A7X because he was just the drummer, and just played stuff. He never had to do anything beyond that.

But of course, not having a job kinda sucks; that'll make anyone desperate.

He is probably the best drummer I've heard yet, in my opinion, but then I heard that he just wanted to take a break to keep the music fresh, which is good, since the last break Dream Theater took was one summer off after 10+ years of constant summer touring.

He was not part of A7X. Okay, I can live with it, but it's not ideal. He definitely improved the band a little bit. Then he was kicked out, but again, whatever.
