R&M's Top Albums of the Decade

2009-11-19 by rasputin | 101 Comments
Recently a poll was conducted on the R&M subforum of sputnikmusic.com to determine the top albums of the past decade.

A total of 328 albums were submitted for the poll, of which the top 50 are ordered precisely and then the remaining 278 are categorised by number of points received. Albums could be from any genre, though they had to be released between 1 Jan 2000 and 31 Dec 2009, and collections, remasters and greatest hits albums were disallowed. The first round in which the albums were submitted was characterised by a points system – each submission had up to 10 albums, with the first ranked album awarded 10 points, the second 9 points, and so on.

Naturally such a system will lead to ties between albums, and so to disentangle all the tied albums in the top 50, a second round was held where albums with the same number of votes were pitted head to head, with each user selecting one between the albums with that particular score. This is why certain albums in the final list have the same number of points – the second round determined in which order the tied albums were to be placed.

The results can be viewed here:

I'm not a forum-goer either, so maybe I'm out of line for being confused... but if this was supposed to be rock and metal, then why are their hip-hop albums on the list???

Also, The Opposite of December is somewhere way near the bottom, but it doesn't fit the criteria because it was released in the 90s. Also, the fact that Tear From the Red made it on the list yet You Come Before You and The Tropic Rot did not is unacceptable. I didn't vote, so this is just my opinion, but You Come Before You is certainly a glaring ommission in my book.

It's the regular R&M goers, so if the Punk, ALT + Indie, Hip Hop, and Other section of the forums were polled they would show different results. That's not to say ppl who frequent sections other than R&M didn't vote though.

1. Lost Horizon - A Flame to the Ground Beneath
2. Blind Guardian - A Night at the Opera
3. Wintersun - Wintersun
4. Cynic - Traced in Air
5. Summoning - Oath Bound
6. Psycroptic - Scepter of Ancients
7. Agalloch - Ashes Against the Grain
8. Symphony X - Paradise Lost
9. Sonata Arctica - Silence

The only one I really cared about was 1. 2-10 was just filler.

And I'm sure you two would have Blackwater Park and Hornets of the Pogrom in your top 10.

i didn't vote for blackwater park but it's a better album than every single one in your list

i dunno why you keep trying to defend yourself, i've voided your opinion on pretty much everything about 4 times now. maybe you should go back to being top of your class in high school, leave listening to good music for the grown ups

I totally missed this, guess I should visit the forums more.

Kinda surprised Blackwater Park is only 10th tbh. Mine would probably be (in no order)

Blind Guardian - A Night at the Opera
Coheed and Cambria - In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth: 3
Converge - Jane Doe
Glassjaw - Everything You Ever Wanted to Know about Silence
Glassjaw - Worship and Tribute
Godspeed you! Black Emperor - Slow Riot For New Zero Kanada
Kayo Dot - Choirs of the Eye
maudlin of the Well - Bath
Opeth - Blackwater Park
Thrice - Vheissu

A bit stereotypical actual.

Deathconsciousness and Close to a World Below ranking above BWP makes me sad. Even given the typical R&M tastes, those 2 albums surprised me. I would have had Paradise Lost in my top 10 probably, but it didn't make the top 50 but thats just one of those things I guess. Also, I can't believe Blind Guardian made the top 50 but I suppose they've always had quite a following on mx, even though it seems to be much less so now.

True that raputin. I think next time, there should be some word of it on the review site (unless there was and I missed it, in which case ignore this). I never go on the forums and had no idea this was happening.

Still, it's a decent list considering the minimal amount of input. I wouldn't say there's a bad album in the top 50 (although there are several I haven't heard, but their average scores are high here so....)

rasputin

I think the reviews site is going to be doing their own one. If we had included reviews site users it wouldn't necessarily be R&M's opinion anyway, though I didn't stop/exclude votes by people who weren't regular posters, I just didn't advertise the poll.
