American Idiot Movie?

2006-01-27 by Electric City | 44 Comments
Rumors circulated for months, and now they have been proven true. Green Day is making a movie over their rock opera. Their chart topping album American Idiot sold millions and millions, and completely reenergized the dead careers of California's favorite pop-punk trio. It met critical acclaim for it's politically charged lyrics and it's incredibly radio-friendly tunes. And it met great political acclaim for being the first punk rock opera. The story is indeed loose, and much of it was left of to interperatation, but finally the questions will cease to be asked. Green Day's Jesus Of Suburbia is supposedly a prelude to to the movie. The film will be directed by music video director of "Smells Like Teen Spirit" fame, Samuel Bayer. Green Day has no plans to star in the film, leaving that to the professionals. The film is due sometime in 2007.

This is kind of cool. It's a good idea. I actually disagree on the "First Punk Rock Opera" thing tho. Although, it's listed under Indie (I think ) here...Say Anything's "...Is a Real Boy" is a Rock Opera, and a lot of people (myself included) consider it to be rather punk. I also realize tho, that the media considers this the first punk rock opera...not just you, so don't take it as a shot.

Here I go, started a debate in a fucking news thread. Ha.

Well, I'd submit that since Green Day will be not in the film, it has a chance. I'm glad they took the professional approach and didn't try to cowboy their way through it. However, it's still iffy... it has the possibility of being good, though, so I'm not counting it out yet.

Just another sceheme to make some more money and get another round of sucking that album dry for all the money they can get. It will be terrible.

Im going to have to disagree. While its true GD is sucking that album dry, Im looking forward to watching the opeera play out in person. It'll be crap if it doesnt have the music though.

They aren't starring in the movie, but it's been verified that they will make a cameo in the movie.

Talk about transforming the album into more of a money making tool than it is now

this is just Reprise presenting the idea to green day and the band saying ok. only way to make more millions off the trio.

Calling it an Opera is just an overblown publicity technique for saying that the album has a story. Unfortunately, one definition of opera is just a dramatic story set to music, so, while the tag is not innacurate, it still conveys a very false grandoise about it.

i think that this is an extremely risky move on their part, it is pretty much a move to suck money from their cd (which i thought was ok, not spectacular) theres alot riding on that movie since it could just be a flop and ruin the seriousness they put in the cd , but theyre already so big that even if the movie is terrible, they will still be just fine, so either way, kudos to them for having the balls for it

My god........

Honestly..............they write and perform some 9 minute songs and they're hailed as the greatest rock band of the decade. This will be a movie of eye-liner and whoring.

my first reaction was: "NOO! BIG MISTAKE"

but after thinking it out, i still dont think its a good idea... i think it should be left alone

im over AI (ive been over it 2 months after i got it), and id rather see a new album than some movie of an old album, but hey? who cares about that when theres money to be made?

L.M.A.O.

Even though I didn't like the album, maybe I'll like the movie. I think Coheed's epic should be made into a movie when it's done. It would be so freaking amazing.

This... makes me cry. They fucking write a shit album, call it a fucking masterpiece. Dumbshit critics hail it as perfect. Why not make it a movie, so that all these people who listen to Green Day and don't realize that they're killing the art in music go waste more money and talk more shit like Green Day are gods. I wish Robert Plant or Roger Waters would beat the balls off of Green Day for calling what they do "music".

^^
i thought it would be Reprise to do this, not the band itself. and if they do own the right to their music(not sure if they do) then they deffinetly agreed to letting this movie happen.

im not flaming on green day. but i wouldnt call other people dumbasses for the fact they rather not do a movie, that itself is an over exaggeration of the band, and yes any other band in my opinion.

and yes i would say fuck no to any music rep who offers a movie to me.

this could go either way... it could blow everyone one away an we'd all be like woa!! -or.... it could suck as much as the video for jesus of suburbia.

good music, Green Day is cool and all.. but how do u make a good movie out of american idiot? it says so up top, it has a loose story line and a lot of it is left to interpretation.

sounds like sam bayer is in for some late nights..

actually, this could be cool.. AI is a classic, whether u wanna believe it or not its gunna be remembered for a longg time, and its gunna be cool to see it in a new way. maybe it would be better to see them focusing on a new album instead.. but since their not going to be in it.. maybe they will.

o an for the record.. stop bitching that u hate Green Day, ur wasting ur time. if u hate them so much an u think they're full of s***, then y r u even here reading the news about an american idiot movie? go waste ur life sumwhere else.

But, with their success with American Idiot, they took that more mature political approach.

Funny, how most of their fan-base is 11 year old girls screaming with "I Love Billy Joe" signs waiving around.

People, stop bagging green day alrite? the fact that they have the balls to go out and make a record that is very contraversial is great. And the fact that they have the balls to make a movie out of it is even better. its giving the people that believe what they are singing a voice. Either you love the band or you dont so i say stop bitching about this band and do something better with your time!

Guitarist, i partly agree with you. So it's a money scheme. But, if they can make money off movies of video games (Doom, Halo) then why not an album? But I'll give it a shot before i fully judge it, so I'll see it before deciding whether it's crap, masterpiece, or anything. Athough the JOS vid is good.
