Glenn Hughes Leaves the Stage 2026-08-17 by John Marinakis CONTRIBUTOR | 0 Comments | Glenn Hughes has announced his retirement from touring and live performances following medical advice.
The 74-year-old singer and bassist revealed that several examinations, including MRI and CT scans and an echocardiogram, determined that he must undergo another open-heart operation. Hughes explained that he had no realistic alternative and would now make his health his highest priority.
In his statement, Hughes expressed gratitude for a life filled with music and thanked his listeners for accompanying him throughout his career. Although the announcement ends his time as a touring performer, he has not confirmed his retirement from recording music.
Known as “The Voice of Rock,” Hughes first gained prominence with Trapeze before joining Deep Purple in 1973 as bassist and co-lead vocalist. His extensive career also includes work with Black Sabbath, Black Country Communion, the Dead Daisies and numerous solo releases.
Hughes was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Deep Purple in 2016. His most recent solo album, Chosen, arrived in September 2025.
