George Winston 2023-06-07 by DadKungFu CONTRIBUTOR | 6 Comments | New Age pianist and mainstay of the Windham Hill label George Winston lost his decade-long battle with cancer on Sunday, June 4. The five-time Grammy award nominee was a foundational figure in New Age music, his solo piano albums notable for their lushness, sense of innocence and approachable beauty. Light and airy, yet expressive and often melancholy, his music toed the line between minimalism and ambient, drawing inspiration from not only nature but children's books and American society, as well as a plethora of artists as far-flung as Laura Nyro and Vince Guaraldi. After his cancer diagnosis, Winston continued to tour and record, only canceling live appearances in the final months of his life.
