Nine inch nails = independent

2007-10-08 by steveosk8s | 18 Comments
"Hello everyone. I've waited a LONG time to be able to make the following announcement: as of right now Nine Inch Nails is a totally free agent, free of any recording contract with any label. I have been under recording contracts for 18 years and have watched the business radically mutate from one thing to something inherently very different and it gives me great pleasure to be able to finally have a direct relationship with the audience as I see fit and appropriate.

Look for some announcements in the near future regarding 2008.

Exciting times, indeed."

as reported by nin.com, theninhotline.com, and pitchforkmedia, and digg, and just about every other music site. this is the second major band(the other being radiohead of course) to go independent in the last week or so.

Does trent plan on releasing the albums independently now, or is he just in the middle of switching?

trent said he plans to self release his new stuff as downloads for 4 dollars, he'll probably do tangible releases via his website too.

This might be the start of the how music is going to be done, along with the rise of digital downloads....

Reznor's pulling a Radiohead...but it was his idea first to release his stuff online independently.

It's kind of annoying how people think this is going to change the entire industry, considering that both Radiohead and NIN have enough money to start their own labels and distribute their own records independently anyway
The point being that they got all this money to do it from major labels

Thank God because his album releases (last 2 albums) have been a waste of money.

I hate to say it but... I don't think I would have heard of NINe INch Nails had they never been under an major label. I'm glad for Trent that he can do this now, but I find it hard to beleive that Nine Inch Nails and Radiohead can kill the major labels, by going indy. As long as the radio keeps playing whatever these labels are giving them, the labels will stay in power.

How will it not influence the industry? Stuff like distribution of downloads, and free CDs with the "donate" method are already proving to be moderately successful ventures (Pax Cecilia, anyone?)

I will give you that Year Zero had some good stuff on it, but it was still not up to par with The Fragile and before hand.

I hope you're kidding because Pax Cecilia are not even close to successful money-wise

Or even popularity-wise for that matterThis Message Edited On 10.08.07

Maynard James Keenan is doin the same thing with his new pusifur stuff isnt he? I think I read an interview on how he is makin this first cd at the end of the month then release tracks on the internet whenever he feels like and not make an album.

^^^its not at all impossible to self release your own albums when you are rich. youll actually make more money off of it so you can sell it cheaper.
