Hard RIP. These guys are a national treasure.
New Orleans Is Sinking is one of my favourite songs from any Canadian group. Oh, and Bobcaygeon too.
Digging: Beastmilk - Climax
Ah comes as no surprise given the diagnosis, but still sad to see him finally go. RIP hard, will always pump the volume on the radio to Fifty Mission Cap
They wont go on without him. Their legacy is eternal though.
Digging: Kelela - Take Me Apart
An absolute legend. I wish their later stuff got more love. There are some fantastic songs on every single Hip record, not to mention his solo stuff. RIP Gord.
Damn, died right before the release of his new record too.
RIP a true Canadian Icon
hard RIP to a canadian legend
Only discovered them when the announcement was made about his brain cancer. Great band, RIP.
The statement from his family is nice. Gord wasn’t just one of the best frontmen EVER to play rock n roll, he was by all accounts an A+ human being. RIP Gord.
Last night Gord quietly passed away with his beloved children and family close by.
Gord knew this day was coming – his response was to spend this precious time as he always had – making music, making memories and expressing deep gratitude to his family and friends for a life well lived, often sealing it with a kiss… on the lips.
Gord said he had lived many lives. As a musician, he lived “the life” for over 30 years, lucky to do most of it with his high school buddies. At home, he worked just as tirelessly at being a good father, son, brother, husband and friend. No one worked harder on every part of their life than Gord. No one.
We would like to thank all the kind folks at KGH and Sunnybrook, Gord’s bandmates, management team, friends and fans. Thank you for all the help and support over the past two years.
Thank you everyone for all the respect, admiration and love you have given Gord throughout the years – those tender offerings touched his heart and he takes them with him now as he walks among the stars.
Love you forever Gord.
The Downie Family
Fuck this year man, my dad’s gonna be a wreck. Never got too much into his music, but I most certainly respected him for his craft and everything he’s done. RIP.
RIP Gordon, will listen to the early Hip's classic albums in his honour...
rest in peace man
Digging: Converge - The Dusk in Us
just got back from going to lunch, CBC is playing a tribute to gord playing all their songs, i got a little emotional ngl just thinking about how much he and the band meant to canada and how many people were listening across the country simultaneously also feeling emotional about it, heavy stuff
i was listening rip gord
Rough few days for Canadian legends.
i was fortunate enough to see them last year
he is an absolute legend in canadian music. rip
Digging: 21 Savage, Offset and Metro Boomin - Without Warning
bobcaygeon, ahead by a century, fireworks, fully completely.
It sounds almost too canadian to be true but i always remember hearing The Hip in the background as we played street hockey as kids, whether it be on the radio or spinning one of the CDs. Gord is undoubtedly a legend in our country.
til there are no stars anymore. rip
got Road Apples on repeat today for sure
Even though I knew it was coming eventually, I got pretty emotional at work today when I found out, it was hard to concentrate for a while. I grew up on The Hip, seen them live a couple times, including their final show in Hamilton last summer. The Hip is pretty much the only band me and my entire group of friends can all agree on. It's a sad day, but he's left an amazing legacy and some unforgettable music. RIP Gord.
Digging: Iron Chic - You Can't Stay Here
moment of silence then blast So Hard Done By
Rip hard, reminds me I never got around to checking some of their albums. My dad absolutely loved this band.
This hits hard... the man was a prolific artist, along with his counterparts. He will sorely be missed.
R.I.P. I'm sure this hits Canadians a lot harder than it does me.
knew it was coming inevitably, but still...
his voice was the voice of canada for a generation
Oof, hard rip.
I'm Canadian but never heard of this band until his cancer diagnosis. RIP gonna have to check this band.
Digging: Dyscarnate - With All Their Might
Christ, for a second there I thought it was Gordon Durie. I’d have been devastated.
What kind of Canadian goes that long without knowing about these guys? Did you live in a commune or something?
Lol yeah that is kinda weird
yeh wut do u actually live in an igloo
This shit really fucking sucks. Guy was really something else. :c
Takes a hell of a man to be able to come to terms with his own immediate mortality, and spend his remaining time doing what he loves -- entertaining people -- rather than wallowing in self-pity at home.
They definitely were one of the most quintessentially-Canadian bands ever. Honest and non-pandering, without grandiose ambitions to make it huge anywhere else. What honest, humble guys. Especially Gord. This is going to hit a lot of Canadians pretty hard. Even though we knew it was coming. While I can't say I listened to them regularly, they were just a band that so many of us grew up on, in some way. They were on the radio here all the time. They've just...always been around.
His solo stuff is really good too. It's a shame their music didn't reach much farther than the Canadian border. They played one of their songs in a Boston Bruins game tonight and I though that was pretty cool.
Got to see the Hip 3 times live and everytime they were great and Downie established himself as an amazing stage presence
dude had an album coming, it was released today
