Chelsea Wolfe's 2nd preview

2017-07-26 by Eames | 51 Comments

Singer/songwriter Chelsea Wolfe has shared "Vex" – a second track from upcoming 5th studio album Hiss Spun.

Gone are the doom-folk ballads, Chelsea is going full metal. Featuring Troy Van Leeuwen (Queens Of The Stone Age) on lead guitar and guest growl vocals from Aaron Turner (ISIS). Album is recorded by Kurt Ballou of the Converge fame.

Earlier last month "16 Psyche" from the same album was previewed.

nope, I can't accept this. it's too good. there has to be a limit on how good Chelsea can be, otherwise it just isn't fair to everyone else.

I've pretty much liked anything she's released besides Pain is Beauty. Doesn't matter what part of the spectrum she's on I am stoked for this

Abyss and Apokalypsis are both better than Pain Is Beauty but nothing she's done since Apokalypsis is below a 4 anyway

She can do no wrong to me.
Also, this production is just ridiculous. Album will sound fucking awesome.

Her best was Apokalypsis and Unknown Rooms. A few song off Pain were awesome but it was not something I loved.

I might be in the minority here but Aaron's vocals are way too deep and heavy for this song. A less extreme style would have worked better IMO.

They didn't bother me, but it's true that they don't especially contribute to the track.

What an amazing song that shivers my teeth. She is amazing with every genre.
Also, best Wolfe album is Pain is Beauty too. This album is wild even though it is the less heavy record of her. But I guess the greatest song she has ever written is "Pale on Pale".
And I guess she will destroy continents with HISS SPUN!

true (although Pain is Beauty is her best imo)

The danger of Chelsea going full-blown metal is her music becoming cheesy, which I think this track is close to. Chelsea usually didn't have to rely on tried and true music tropes to convey emotional heaviness, and I don't think that the increased metal influences on "Abyss" or even the recent "16 Psyche" have took much away from her brand of atmosphere, but this song in particular seems to be trading nuance for a predictable metal formula. Especially evident when Aaron Turner releases the Kraken towards the end.

idk man just not feeling this heavier direction she's going in. The two singles so far have been very middle of the road in terms of my reception to them. Honestly just a preference thing. Regardless, if these singles represent the final product accurately, I would be lying if I said I wasn't let down.

Really? The direction is fine. Given that she is working with Kurt Ballou I expect the songwriting to be tightened up a bit.
What sound would you have her stay in? The weird southern/gothic acoustic thing she did for a while? the not-so-good foray into electronic form Pain is Beauty?

Hell yes all her work prior to Abyss was far more interesting and engaging than this bollocks. FUCK KURT BALLOU

What is wrong with Kurt? He knows his shit. The two songs sound awesome on good headphones.
Relax, he won't turn her into some garbage artist. Have faith, she hasn't released a bad record yet.

Agree to disagree. The first three tracks on Abyss were super promising, but the rest of the album devolved into unmemorable-ness and the production got really shoddy and inconsistent for some reason. Really killed the vibes.

Guitar tone in this one is very Russian Circles. Not really hearing how this is 'formulaic' songwriting. Lean, less meandering structures does not equate to formulaic at all. Literally formulaic would be to repeat the same schtick and style off aspookalypsis for 4 albums.

Guys, Hiss Spun is leaked and it is awesome. Even though I am into her mellow songs such as Halfsleeper, Hiss Spun is my fav record from her discography. The sum of the album is ANIMAL. Yes, it is like an animal. So wild! Better than Abyss. I also agree with Astral Abortis about the production of Abyss. The production killed the nature sound of CW in Abyss record but still there are great songs. Anyway. HISS SPUN is great!

I caved and listened to it. This is her darkest album yet.
If Abyss was tight-chested then this is suffocating.
This is definitely her densest production to date, less spacey and full of rot. There is also a very Kurt Ballouesque guitar tone that has the mids pumped way up
The more metallic sound means less folk and more doom. But this is like nothing on Abyss.
