Details of the various versions of the re-issue of Nirvana's final studio album, In Utero, have been released. The base re-issue comes with the following features:

* Kurt Cobain‘s handwritten lyrics

* A new 2013 mix of the entire album

* The original never-before-heard Steve Albini mixes of “Heart-Shaped Box” and “All Apologies”

* The recently unearthed NIRVANA instrumental “Forgotten Tune”

* The original Dave Grohl solo demo of “Marigold” from December of 1990 — the earliest Grohl composition/recording ever released.

* A four-page letter from Albini to the band outlining his plans for how the album should be recorded.

* Liner notes by Bobcat Goldthwait

* A remixed and newly mastered CD of the entire December 13, 1993 “Live And Loud” show at Seattle’s Pier 48 featuring the final touring lineup of Cobain, Novoselic, Grohl, and Pat Smear

* The complete “Live And Loud” show along with several never-before-released bonus performances, that will also be released separately as a standalone DVD and digital download on September 24.

Various other versions, including a "Super Deluxe" edition, are outlined in this article: http://www.metalhammer.co.uk/news/nirvanas-in-utero-album-is-getting-a-swanky-20th-anniversary-rerelease/

Actually, I'm looking forward to hearing a new mix though, as the old one had a few problems.

I'd rather have more of the money put in Dave or Chris' pocket rather than Courtney...if that's what's happening I don't care if they have too much money

They've got to milk it for as long as possible. Albini's mix will be released in twenty years

"Newly revealed documents from the Fix.com show that Frances, not her mother, Courtney Love, now controls the publicity rights to the name and image of her late father, Kurt Cobain. According to the Fix.com, until her mother pays back a loan for $2.75 million which Love borrowed from her daughter's trust fund, Courtney has no rights or say over the use of Kurt Cobain's name or image"

Now sure how relevant this is to releasing Nirvana works but it's something

"wish they'd just release Albini's mix of the whole thing"

Aside from Heart-Shaped Box and All Apologies the original record was all Albini mixes. To be honest it's easy to see why they handed those tracks to Scott Litt, Albini's mixes sound lifeless in comparison. His low vocals/no overdubs policy really doesn't work for them.

I'm guessing the Marigold demo is from the thought to be lost Late! tape?

Nope, this version even predates that. It was featured on the Heart-Shaped Box single.

Sorry, I'm actually wrong there. The version on Heart-Shaped Box had Krist on bass and was recorded in 1993, apparently.
You might be right, Philip.

Yeah Pocketwatch was recorded late 1990-early 1991 so it might well be. Well it most probably is.

Does anyone know what happened to the original mixes that were meant to be game changing but the label turned them down? Would love to hear those versions, I half expected them to come with this release, disappointed since I already have most of the other stuff.

By original mixes you mean the Albini mixes? As far as I know this whole thing is kind of a hoax. The label turned the Albini mixes down an said they needed new mastering. Since only All Apologies and Heart Shaped Box got new mastering, the original album features the original Albini mixes, except of these two songs. And those are now features in the Albini versions on the reissue. So the complete Albini produced album should now be complete.

A new mix of this album doesn't interest me in the slightest. It sounds fine as it is to me, I would have just been interested in this supposed original mix that was drastically changed before the release to be a bit more 'mainstream' friendly. But I guess it doesn't exist
