New Burzum Album

Black metal legend Varg Vikernes has announced that he will be releasing a Burzum album titled "Sôl austan, Mâni vestan" or "East of the Sun, West of the Moon" three months from now. The album will be comprised of "instrumental electronic music" which Varg compares to Tangerine Dream.

There will be additional tracks that Varg recorded for his wife's upcoming movie, ForeBears, which Varg will be releasing for free online.

The tracklist is as follows:

01. Sôl austan («East of the Sun»)

02. Rûnar munt þû finna («You shall find Secrets»)

03. Sôlarrâs («Sun-journey»)

04. Haugaeldr («Burial Mound Fire»)

05. Feðrahellir («Forebear-Cave»)

06. Sôlarguði («Sun-god»)

07. Ganga at sôlu («Deasil»)

08. Hîð («Bear’s Lair»)

09. Heljarmyrkr («Death’s Darkness»)

10. Mâni vestan («West of the Moon»)

11. Sôlbjörg («Sunset»)

He can't live in Norway because the gov'ment wants to fine him for burning all those churches, so he relocated to kvlt France. I don't know why but I find this unusually funny.

"varg answering people on his website about album details

Some of the introductory stuff in that post were pretty genuinely thankful sounding too.

I gotta say though, he's not saying it will sound like tangerine dream, just that it could be compared. His quote is "You have not heard anything like this before, although we can compare it to other electronic music, such as Tangerine Dream – and I guess to old electronic Burzum music as well." To be honest, I'm more excited for this than I was for any of his stuff after Belus. I really loved Tomhet and some of his other ambient electronic workings before he went to prison. Sure Daudi sucked ass, but he was pretty damn limited in what he could do.

It might end up being bad, but I'm at least excited to have expectations beyond more lukewarm "middle-aged black metal" to quote ThyCrossAwaits.

it will at least be interesting, if nothing else. a breath of fresh air into his music might be just what he needed, and yeah, his ambient songs from the old albums kick arse

Varg Vikernes surely can't pull of a Tangerine Dream that easily. I'm a big fan of that band too, so this album is probably going to have to surpass everything he's done since 'Filosofem' if I'm to be convinced that it's anything more than decent. His last few albums have been disappointing at the best of times.

I really think Varg should change the name of the 'band' to Varg Vikernes...I mean the last half of the 'band''s career has basically consisted of him fucking around with different instruments.
