No New ATD-I LP

2012-02-22 by Deviant. STAFF | 55 Comments
The station may be operational again, but for seminal post hardcore act At The Drive-In, new material isn't something they're working towards in light of their recent reunion.

While the act has been confirmed to appear at both the Benicassim and Coachella festivals, guitarist Omar Rodriguez-Lopez has dispelled the rumours that the band may head into the studio at some point in the distant future.

Speaking to Kerrang!, the guitarist referred to the reunion as a "nostalgia thing" and compared it to "an old T-shirt that doesn't fit anymore".

"Will there be a new album? No, no, no. At The Drive-In is more of a nostalgia thing – it's songs we wrote when we were all in our 20s and we're doing a couple of shows. It's an old T-shirt that doesn't fit me any more, but when you put it on again, it feels nice. It's as simple as that."

Lopez has also been quoted in the past as saying: We’re not getting any younger and there’s been an offer of money every year. You’d be a fool and a politician to pretend that wasn’t part of it.”

Nothing like a little honesty.

i really don't like it when artists talk negatively about their old material. not that what he said here was that harsh, but he's said said worse things about his work with ATDI in other interviews. even if an artist feels that they've outgrown something that they put out in the past, i feel like talking about it in a negative light is disrespectful to the current fans of that older stuff. it's almost like saying that you're above your fans or something. i don't have any strong emotional attachment to this band in particular, but i just don't like the dismissive attitude towards something that means so much to so many people. hopefully i worded this in a way that makes sense.

^^ So you really think after they've all gotten older and grown out of their more "punky" sounds, found their own niches, and have kind of fallen off themselves in quality after about a decade, they'd have come back and made Relationship of Command 2? Really?

I mean I love ATDI, The Mars Volta, Sparta, Rodriguez-Lopez's solo project, etc. but c'mon.

Everyone always assumes that when bands re-form a new album will be the best thing ever, until they hear it

We all know how a new ATDI album would go. Whatever Cedric wants, Omar will soon want, and then well end up with something ridiculous like Noctourniquet.

duh. and you have to be retarded to think that a new atd-i record would have been a good idea in the first place. no one wants to hear a band of this quality shit all over their legacy by releasing something sub-par.

It's quite possible that they will tour for a couple years and decide "Hey, maybe we should write some new stuff to play." You never knowwww.

Two answers to this silly little question:

It was announced here
or
"Speaking to Kerrang!, the guitarist referred".......

Take your pick
