Chi Cheng recovery progress

2012-02-08 by big daddy bris. | 74 Comments
Over three and a half years since his near-fatal car accident, Deftones bass player Chi Cheng has begun to finally emerge from his coma. Cheng, along with responding to questions with grunts, now lift his legs upon command. This may not seem like much, but it shows significant progress towards his recovery.

Cheng was involved in a car accident in November of 2008. His car hit another car going 60mph and he got ejected from the car, as he was not wearing a seat belt. He has been in a deep coma since then.

More information and a video of Chi moving his legs can be found here:

Hopefully he keeps recovering x

The latter can wait. For now, let's just celebrate that he's on the steady road to recovery. And it's awesome.

this is great news, although it will most probably take another 2 or 3 years to recover almost completely. i didn't know that they have removed half of his brain, that's gonna affect him in many ways... also, i don't know how he'll return to Deftones this way

I doubt it's true that they removed half his brain. Granted he'll probably never play in Deftones again, maybe 5-10 years down the line from his recovery he may be able to play simple bass lines but he's extremely unlikely to ever regain the ability he had.

Fantastic that he's on his way back to recovery though. Honestly some of the best news of the year.

We shouldn't worry about Chi missing any percentage of his brain. There are several documented cases in which individuals have had significant portions of it removed and have come to live completely normal lives. His brain will--and probably is, judging by this awesome news--rewiring and rerouting itself to make up for its missing parts. He's just going to need time after he wakes up from his coma.

The point is, we should be nothing but happy for this guy. Hope he's back on his feet in no time

We really should get some priority. He's a great musician, and Deftones are awesome, but simply the fact that he's still alive is a miracle. I'm overjoyed that he could recover, and that really should be enough for you without hoping that Deftones release Eros or whatever.

Also, everyone remember to use your seatbelts. I hate to use Chi as an example, but if there's one thing we can take from this is that we should all be proactive and be sure to utilize at least the bare minimum of an auto's safety features.
