Sublime's name/copyright woes

2009-11-08 by CrazyFool84 | 25 Comments
A judge has ruled that remaining Sublime members Bud Gaugh and Eric Wilson may not continue to play under the Sublime band name without consent from the Nowell estate, in light of evidence the name was copyrighted by Brad Nowell. The Nowell family has expressed wishes that the band not continue under this name and took action three days before the newly reformed band was set to take the stage at the Smokeout Festival.

Indeed, I thought Sublime and good music were synonymous with each other . I'm glad about this to be honest, love these guys to death and fully support Eric and Bud in virtually everything they've done afterwards (minus that Volcano thing Gaugh did) but couldn't get past the idea of this without Brad.

I know the whole argument about the frontman dying due to his own stupidity and the band having the right to move on, but Brad did the smart thing here. By copyrighting the name, that ends that...I truly hope Eric and Bud didn't know that he had previously (or should I say supposedly) expressed wishes that the name not be used in a project without him. If so, and they still planned on carrying on regardless, it's a pure money grab (which it is more or less anyway) and I'd lose a fierce amount of respect.

Probably for the best. Sublime died when Nowell died. End of story.

that would irritate me, but, i concur with yall, sublime died with brad, bind melon died with shannon, nirvana died with kurt, and ozzy died when he left black sabbath. their talented enough they can do their own shit...write a tribute to the greatest band..learn from dave grohl.

i'm so glad about this. it was actually kinda hilarious to me that they still called themselves 'sublime' w/o brad. i realize what a tremendous tragedy brad's death was, and it haunts me personally nearly every day, but as huge a sublime fan as i am, they're done b/c brad's dead. which sucks.
