I'm pretty surprised by this, but then again PETA are an overly-politicised, overly-bureaucratic organisation. It's ridiculous, and will do absolutely nothing to curve malpractices exercised by pet shop chains. If PETA think that requesting musicians to change their names to some abstract form then they really need to pull their heads out of their asses and deal with real problems in animal rights directly. Too often do they survive on the advocacy of ‘celebrities’ to prop up their existence, without doing anything practical, apart from advertisement campaigns. Being veg and for the animal rights movement, I’m pretty annoyed they waste their time doing these kind of things. Who's the sad panda now?

Aside from this being hilarious, it's pretty illogical, and doesn't really help any animals. Their ultimate goal is to convince people to buy from rescue shelters because animals in pet shops are raised poorly... why is an animal in a rescue shelter? Because it's "abandoned and unwanted," probably didn't receive proper exercise and shielding from the daylight, or, if it were arboreal, had to settle for one of those damn felt cat tree things. PETA is a silly, silly organization.
