Sublime back together with new singer?

2009-03-02 by Alex101 | 31 Comments
It's been almost 13 years since the death of singer and guitarist Bradley Nowell effectively put an end to Sublime.

According to a report on MTV.com, Eric Wilson and Bud Gaugh took to the stage with new a singer and performed under the name Sublime; the first time doing so since May 25th, 1996. The performance, which took place on Saturday night at the Cantina Los Hombres in Sparks, Nevada, featured a musician named Rome replacing the late Bradley Nowell on vocals.

Del Mar, Gaugh's current outfit, who opened the evening posted the following on their MySpace:

"So Del Mar played the gig at Cantina last night in Reno, it was packed and amazing. What really fucking killed it was SUBLIME reuniting and playing with new singer, Rome. We're fucking stoked for Bud, Eric, and Rome- Bud's still playing with Del Mar, and Sublime doesn't have any firm tour plans or anything YET, but we'll keep you posted on their progress."

Brad wrote almost all of the lyrics and music for this band (if I remember correctly) so it seems that Sublime will be a nostalgia act at best and a bad cover band at worst.

The other 2 boys must be running out of cash and don't feel like getting real jobs just yet.

guys i think we're being a little bit hasty with our scorn

i mean sublime was a pretty light-hearted band to begin with anyway it's not like this is supposed to be SUPER SERIOUS

You're right Willie, without Brad the band loses its soul. I love Bud and Eric and respect everything they did with Sublime, but this is like Rush going out without one of their members. Nowell was too intigral to the trio, this feels like a glorified cover band, I hope this was a one off thingThis Message Edited On 03.03.09

this is absolute garbage. they shouldn't use the name Sublime. Don't leech off the popularity and start a new band. I hate when good bands do this sigh.

JCFiasco
Who says that they don't have a right to the name Sublime. I agree that it won't be the same without Brad as the lead singer, and writer of the music, but thats not to say that they won't be able to be Sublime.
I'd say to not get too hasty. Maybe through some miracle they will put out something mediocre.

Sublime sucked WITH him, why wouldn't they WITHOUT him?

Of course you will say Sublime sucked, all you listen to is metal with a splash of something else here or there. This is too chill for you, but I'm sure you realize how loved Sublime is outside of your little metal paradigm. This Message Edited On 03.03.09

Just take a look at your pie chart...hmm more then half is metal, metal core and death metal...hmm

Except the pie chart is/has always been bullshit because it adds anything that you rate, regardless of what you actually give it for a rating, grow the fuck up. Are Reel Big Fish too chill for me? What about Explosions in the Sky? Maybe I don't like Sublime because I think their music is shitty. This Message Edited On 03.03.09

I'm going to drop this since we have moved away from the topic of this thread, but I'd like to point out you told me to grow up in what is possibly one of the most immature ways. Have a good day sir.

I'd rather see badfish at this point. This is kind of like if they had a nirvana "reunion". Wait...this is exactly like if they had a nirvana reunion.

honestly, these guys were just as much in the band as brad was. Maybe he sang but it's not like they were just there to help out, they were part of the band. and you guys haven't heard anything from the new guy so saying this is stupid is kind of a ignorant response. Wait til music comes out to judge things like this.

I refuse to believe this happened. It was Del Mar covering some Sublime songs, that was all.

Hey, the AiC reunion was good... though to be fair, Staley didn't write most of their stuff.

I don't know about this, i hope it's good.
but, I can't really see sublime without brad.
I would be nice to hear new sublime music, but let's face it.
Sublime without brad, isn't sublime. Plain and simple.

Also, I think what pisses people off is the title of this. How can sublime be "back together" if this new guy wasn't even in or affiliated with sublime? This Message Edited On 03.03.09

honestly, these guys were just as much in the band as brad was.

Yea, they were just as much IN the band...but they weren't nearly as essential. Brad wrote ALL of their songs. He did the arrangements, lyrics, vocals, guitar playing...hell, one of their best albums is essentially just him.
At least with AiC Jerry Cantrell did a majority of the music writing.
Besides, Badfish performs these songs better than these two guys do...and they know it. They admitted to being happy that Badfish was touring and selling their records for them. This Message Edited On 03.03.09This Message Edited On 03.03.09

Everyone needs to stop
Sublime is one of the greatest bands the world has seen
People should be excited that they decided to get back together
Although Bradley was a big part of the band i think that they can pull it off
Rome is a really good singer a little bit of a different style but still pulls it off
Also Bradley probably would have wanted the band to continue after his death
this is reunion is late but probably what Bradley would want.
The new sublime is 2/3 of the band so I think they have the right to be called Sublime
