Travis Barker sues after crash

2008-11-24 by ninjuice | 29 Comments
Drummer Travis Barker (of Plus 44 and formerly of Blink-182) is suing various parties after being involved in a plane crash on September 18th. Four people were killed and two people (Barker and DJ Adam Goldstein) suffered severe burns after the Learjet they were in veered off the runway and caught fire. (for more info on the crash, see http://www.cnn.com/2008/SHOWBIZ/Music/09/20/barker.plane.crash/index.html)

Barker is suing Global Exec Aviation, the owners of the plane; Goodyear Tire, who (presumably) made the tires on the landing gear; Bombardier Inc, the maintenance company; and the charter firms that brokered the flight (Clay Lacy Aviation Inc. and Inter Travel and Services Inc.)

Thelma Martin Still, who is the mother of Charles Monroe Still Jr. (Barker's bodyguard who died in the crash), is suing along with Barker. The two claim that "the plane was defective and that the pilots were poorly trained and should have tried taking off rather than proceeding down the runway."

Meanwhile, Barker is supposed to make a full recovery from burns he suffered and is back in the studio already.

IMO Barker is/was the only really talented member of Blink. If anyone of those parties is really at fault then I say more power to him.

Completely agree.... it's not like we're talking coffee burns here.

What surprises me is that he is only sueing them for $25000. Usually celebrities go over the top and sue for millions for something trivial like using a song without permission.

Not a huge fan of Blink but always thought he was a decent drummer. This Message Edited On 11.24.08

^^ Yeah, at least he's suing them for a reasonable amount of money, the guy almost frickin died, he has every right to sue.

Really? That makes me respect the guy even more.
Hopefully the mom sues for more though. Barker got burned really bad, but she freaking lost her son.

When I first read it, I kind of rolled my eyes. Really tho, it makes sense. Especially when you look at the amount that it's for.

Dumb pilots cause private plane crashes, not tire defects.

Dumb pilots cause private plane crashes, not tire defects.

They (I'm not exactly sure who) are saying the pilots should have tried to take off instead of....whatever they did. Hence them being named in the suit.

It doesn't really matter if you're rich or not, these companies probably should be sued.

Then why did Blink-182's best album come out before he joined the band?

They aborted their takeoff... which is why the accident happened.

"I HAD A MAJOR ACCIDENT AND ALMOST DIED=MONEY MONEY MONEY"

It's more on the principal of they shouldn't just get a slap on the wrist. They're lucky he's only suing for $25,000. In a world where people sue for $5 million for being burnt by coffee, this really is a reasonable lawsuit.

Dude Ranch was good, but the percussion definitely got better with Travis, hands down.

OK.. this is a funny precedent that people are trying to establish here, that if you are famous, you cannot sue, even for legitimate reasons...

lets say it was you in that crash

OK
you're in the hospital for a week or something... you come out and you are all fucked up and burned all over and can't go to work so you get laid off, you can't find a job, you can't do the things you love, you need to spend a lot of money you don't have to make a full recovery

yeah, I would sue, because the parties at fault should pay for fixing my life that they thrashed up, I shouldn't have to do that

that's not unreasonable, I mean it's not like he slipped and fell down the stairs here and is sueing the city or whatever. this was a plane crash where people died

just because he has celebrity status... I mean, he lost more than just money on that flight, you know?

Like others have said, more power to him.
I have a lot of respect for the guy--and the fact that he's asking for a very reasonable amount makes me like him more.
People need to own up to their actions.

He ought to sue for the amount of money it took to pay for the funerals, all the medical bills and then a good amount to the families of the departed
