Lars Ulrich on Sound Quality

2008-09-30 by Tyler EMERITUS | 28 Comments
Missing the point completely, Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich has commented on recent issues regarding the sound quality of the band’s latest release Death Magnetic.

Quote:
Somebody told me about [people complaining that the Guitar Hero version of Death Magnetic sounds better]. Listen, what are you going to do? A lot of people say [the CD] sounds great, and a few people say it doesn't, and that's OK. You gotta remember, when we put out ...And Justice for All, people were going, 'What happened to these guys, this record? There's no bass on it. It sounds like it was recorded in a fuckin' garage on an eight-track.' And now ...And Justice for All is sort of the seminal Metallica record that supposedly influenced a whole generation of death-metal bands. The difference between back then and now is the Internet.

The Internet gives everybody a voice, and the Internet has a tendency to give the complainers a louder voice. Listen, I can't keep up with this shit. Part of being in Metallica is that there's always somebody who's got a problem with something that you're doing: 'James Hetfield had something for breakfast that I don't like.' That's part of the ride.

Yeah, I don't see anything wrong with his statement. Although, he kind of didn't really mention his feeling on the quality... as the article initially states.

Pretty much correct on most levels.

I think he's more or less right. I don't think any band should hold themselves ransom to a minority of critics.

so do I but Lars still is a douche

I guess he is right on a few levels but he didn't really cover the whole "Death Magnetic sounds like it was mixed/mastered by a three legged cat" issue...

Lars has truly failed humanity.
The question is: Why is the GUITAR HERO version better than the CD Version?

This is ridiculous, a lot of Guitar Hero song versions sound much better than the original, and the sound and production on Death Magnetic is just fine. Agree with SOSM as well.

I hate Lars, and I hate his drumming.

But Justice is my favorite Metallica album, and he's making a good point for once.

AJFA is a pretty influential album whether people would like to admit it or not.

what a prick! for once, it's not metallica that's the problem, song-wise the record's great! its the sound engineers that people (justifiably) have problem with!

It actually makes alot of sense, really. He pretty much inadvertantly put the blame on Rick Rubin, who is infamous to have final say on mixes (I read that Rubin demanded an Executive Producer credit on the last Slayer LP when in reality all he did was have a few comments about the mixes).

Rubin did this twice before, both on RHCP records. Californiaction sounds so compressed its intolerable. Annnnd about half of Stadium Arcadium sounds the same.

Now Lars is right by saying it sounds slammin on car stereos, it absolutely does. But if Im listening to it on Itunes or wherever else, the clipping is too much. Whatever, I love the cd nonetheless and havent rated it yet cus im unsure what to give it!

I actually have to agree with the old chap this time...

On a first couple of listens I was 'what the f@@k' now is great... I found a Guitar hero version and would say I prefer the CD mix.
Ok its not perfect it just adds to the overall sound and finish - IMO a perfect sounding album would not of been the same.

However don't do it again.....

Well, besides his complete sidestep of the original complaint, he is right in a way. Probably one of the smarter things he's ever said.

more or less; meta gave it 77. i think being on this large of a stage, as metallica has been, puts no opinion at a real minor-ity
