It's certainly an improvement over St. Anger, but it's still not very thrashy at all.

Parts of this are really sweet. I'm glad to hear double bass. I think the little sound clips here and there from the studio sound promising. Will this really be the least sh*tty thing they've done since the black album?

I'm starting to believe St. Anger was all an elaborate marketing ploy in order to boost the critical claim of all albums by Metallica thereafter. Bravo PR guys...bravo.

But seriously, this is a step up for them, but mostly is unremarkable. +1 for audible bass though. Now if only Hetfield could write lyrics of a quality circa "...And Justice" and do better vocals I'd start to regain some lost faith.

It's not fantastic, no. But really, anything ok is better than St Anger, and this lies somewhere between 2.5 and 3.5, can't decide where, so well done guys for stepping up your game, at least.
