Alice in Chains wrap up next album 2008-08-03 by Alex101 | 17 Comments | Alice in Chains are wrapping up the writing phase for its first all-new studio effort since 1995's self-titled third album. Before the band begins recording, the guys will head over to Peoria, Arizona to join their good friends Deftones at KUPD's End of Summer Scorcher on September 20.
The event will take place at the Peoria Sports Complex and tickets are now on sale as of yesterday (August 2nd) at all local Arizona Club Tattoo locations.
Tickets will be available online beginning tomorrow (August 4) via Tickets.com.
In a spring 2008 interview with The Pulse of Radio, Alice in Chains guitarist Jerry Cantrell confirmed that he, bassist Mike Inez, drummer Sean Kinney and new singer William DuVall have been writing songs for months, but explained that they're not rushing to start recording. "We've been working about the last four months, and there's a good bulk of music and a good body of work so far, and we're having fun, and you know, we're taking our time and trying to figure out where William fits in and where we need to step up, and I have all the confidence in the world in the guys," he said. "The most important thing to me is that we're all together and, you know, it's been a tough and painful experience at times, but it's been very rewarding at the same time."
Alice in Chains officially regrouped in early 2006 after a 10-year absence with DuVall stepping in for late frontman Layne Staley, who died in 2002.
The group did its own headlining tour in the summer and fall of 2006, followed by a 2007 co-headlining jaunt with Velvet Revolver.

This cold be very very bad... or very very good.
| | | I'd rather them record an album under a different name.
| | | I heard live vids of the new guys and he sounds good, definatly a fit, time will tell i guess, I really hope this doesn't blow
| | | I think they should be able to record under the AIC moniker. The band was just as much Cantrell's if not more, as well as Sean Kinney. It's their choice, and obviously the name means something to them to continue with using it.
I like Jerry's solo work a great deal, so I really can't see myself disliking this. But then again, I think that I have real expectations of what this album will be, a.k.a. not Dirt.
| | | This will probably kick ass. I'm not really bothered by the new singer - if anything I'm happy they didn't find a Layne clone and got a guy with a different style, and Cantrell wrote most of AIC's stuff anyways. They've got a lot to live up to though, I absolutely love Dirt and especially Cantrell's Degradation Trip.
| | | I just dont see an Alice album without Layne, he was just brilliant and the reason they were as good as they were. I will check it out though.
| | | dude layne was good but so is jerry...
| | | i have faith in jerry that this won't be as embarassing as most comeback albums are, but i doubt it'll be the same without layne.
| | | As much as I like Alice in Chains and William DuVall, I really wish they wouldn't do this. It just taints their earlier work.
| | | So we get to see just how important the lead singer is to band. Most people see the band as that singer and don't deserve to have the name without it. The same debate has been done with Queen, Pink Floyd and various others. People need to think about who the band really is not just the singer.
Thus, I think AIC has every right to continue using the name of the band which is not equivalent to Layne Staley.
| | | I have no problem with them using the name with another singer. But Layne was very important to their sound. I have no doubts that they can make a solid album but it just wont be the same.
| | | I have faith that Jerry can write another brilliant album, but at the same time I know it will not be Dirt. I do feel it will be a fairly accessible album, with not as dark subject matter as their previous works.
| | | i just dont see why they needed another singer. i mean jerry sang more than layne on their last album anyways. it sounded great. now were gonna have this foreign voice and its gonna be all wierd.
| | | It won't be Dirt or Alice In Chains. Probably not Jar Of Flies either. I think it'll most likely be either quite different, or closer to Facelift. I hope it works, whatever it turns out to be. The new singer will most likely never be as good as Layne Staley, but so few people were. I'm definitely looking out for this.
| | | Just think- Was AC/DCs Back In Black a stain compared to their earlier work with Bon Scott? Sure, it wasn't the same, not as good as Highway To Hell, but still damn good, right? Well, it could be like that with Alice In Chains. We'll just have to wait and see...
| | | This is dumb as hell, this is boggy depot with a new lead singer.
| | | hmm..
