Spiritbox New Single

2026-09-08 by John Marinakis CONTRIBUTOR | 59 Comments
Spiritbox have unexpectedly released a new single titled Mourning, accompanied by an official music video.

The song is the Canadian metal band's first new material since their second studio album, Tsunami Sea, arrived in March 2025. Spiritbox have not yet confirmed whether it will appear on a forthcoming album or EP.

Mourning emphasizes the melodic side of Courtney LaPlante's vocals while retaining the band's combination of heavy guitars, electronic textures and atmospheric production. Guitarist Mike Stringer co-produced the track alongside longtime collaborator Dan Braunstein.

Stringer also co-directed the colorful accompanying video with Alex Bemis. Its vivid presentation contrasts with the largely monochromatic visual identity that surrounded Tsunami Sea, suggesting the beginning of a new creative period for the band.
Spiritbox will shortly begin a headline tour across Europe and the United Kingdom with support from Jinjer and Dying Wish.

Wtf they released an album last year? The last I heard them was an EP, it was solid.

Go listen, the consensus is it's weaker than what came before but it's a very solid album.

Whenever Spiritbox release something new, I can be sure it's great even before listening. Gorgeous song. And beautiful video as well.

Oh look, Spiritbox still chasing every popular music trend trying to stay relevant. Music industry (Le)plant garbage

Hmm, yes, being popular is bad and automatically makes you an industry plant. And getting along with trends is inherently bad, totally.

The most inoffensive popcore song in the history of popcore

@artiswar they got a few heavy songs, but 95% of their stuff is this popcore trite garbage

@verdr IDK mate, almost every song of theirs I've heard she's screaming her head off .. the softer songs are the outliers.

But alas this is one of those bands that makes the "true metalheads" rabid for whatever reason. Probably because SB achieved 100x the reach in a fraction of the time vs their favourite niche blackened techdeath pornogrind pigsquealcore band that attracts 150 annual listeners.

Some people also seem like those death metal fans hating on deathcore for desecrating their favourite genre except it's metalcore fans hating on popcore.

Yes, it´s quite funny to me why this band seems to irritate some people so much.

I´m not gonna sit here and say they're the state of the art in their genre, but there's a 100 more mediocre bands in that genre (and often a lot more pretentious) that get less shit from metal gatekeepers. And it's not like at least 3 of it's members haven't been paying their dues and doing this for years.

Yeah, I agree. They don't really "transcend" the genre but I think they're talented and are a pretty good barometer of where mainstream metal is right now. They're leagues above other ass bands like BMTH, Bad Omens, Sleep Token, Ice Nine Kills, Falling in Reverse, or even Architects at this point and it's funny to see people get so triggered over them when their sound is so uncontroversial.

Kusangii nailed it. They’re a poser band constantly chasing whatever music trend is popular and being pushed as some ground breaking band yet they copy everyone else.

This kinda music is really popular right now with the kids so they’re making a ton of money, not really surprising to see them continue to get poppier

Knowing them, the next single is gonna be screams. Wouldn't mind more melodic music from them though, not everything needs to be a Cellar Door or Soft Spine.

the drums don't really change from the verse into the chorus so the chorus doesn't even hit like it should. It all just kinda keeps going.

Mike went from a truly interesting guitarist to writing the most boring and samey riffs in the genre over and over. I'll always enjoy listening to Courtney sing in a basic background noise sort of way, but I do wish they'd actually put in a little effort, because we know they can write cool stuff when they try.

I do wonder about that. They seem to take more and more stabs at true mainstream appeal, trying to find a single that will break them through to the next level of fame. Which is fine I guess, but it is weird when you consider how much proggier and technical the earlier stuff was. This song is good but so minimalistic and almost feels unfinished. It is nice to hear Josh get some background vocals in though

I'll do say that they have never achieved the level of interest that their 1st EPs had, so the ability is definitely there. But I was listening to this song and thinking "man, I guess getting 3 grammy nominations and never winning has made them obsessed with hitting that one track that will finally get them over the line".

“Wish y'all would keep this energy with actual garbage bands like Knocked Loose”

I’ve been anti that band since their very first EP, but I’ve also tried to make an honest effort to not rain on the collective parade of people who seem to love them on here in every thread. But also, both bands aren’t my thing at all

I couldn't be much more ambivalent about this band. Polished anodyne modern metal with a balance of melody and groove. It's fine, but I have no desire to listen to them.
